Both a captivating narrative and a book of environmental and historical significance, American Buffalo tells us as much about ourselves as Americans as it does about the creature who perhaps best of all embodies the American ethos.

Story
A story of defiance and determination by a controversial scientist, this is Lee Berger's own take on finding Homo naledi, an all-new species on the human family tree and one of the greatest discoveries of the 21st century. In 2013, Lee Berger, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, heard of a cache of bones in a hard-to-reach underground cave in South Africa. He put out a call around the world for petite collaborators - men and women small and adventurous enough to be able to squeeze through eight-inch tunnels to reach a sunless cave forty feet underground. It worked.

Not a direct sequel to ALMOST HUMAN but might as well have been. Lots of thoughts provoking ideas within. I did particularly enjoy the very ending as it was similar to the ending of the 1st book and a decent cliffhanger for a work of non-fiction.

Story
The emergence of strange new diseases is a frightening problem that seems to be getting worse. In this age of speedy travel, it threatens a worldwide pandemic. We hear news reports of Ebola, SARS, AIDS, and something called Hendra killing horses and people in Australia - but those reports miss the big truth that such phenomena are part of a single pattern. The bugs that transmit these diseases share one thing: they originate in wild animals and pass to humans by a process called spillover. David Quammen tracks this subject around the world.

The chapters about the different causes of infections (virus’, bacteria, etc…), the discovery and hunt for the origin of HIV/AIDS as well as the clear description of numerical portion of the names of viruses when speaking about the variations that exist just makes me feel smarter. An excellent book if maybe a touch too much with scientific technical jargon.

A few maybe ok stories. But most are quite possibly the worst collection of English language words ever collected. I get that there’s fiction for every style but these stories are mostly pure garbage. I’m not going to avoid the authors because even good authors write an occasional something that’s subpar to their usual works but what I will avoid is any collection from John Joseph Adams. I just get the impression this guy just randomly puts stuff together vs. actually reads stories to group well thought out stories. Don’t waste your time with or money on the Wasteland series of short stories…you will regret it.

Sci-Fi & Fantasy has no limits. Ok. But what’s with the excessive amount that of lesbians? Also, how are all these mostly fantasy without any that have realistic scenarios? Best thing about this collection were the performances except even with those, maybe not have two or more stories back-to-back read by the same person, different stories of course but they it does get confusing. Unless you made the mistakes as I did and got the whole WASTELANDS series, I’d recommend moving along to better fiction anywhere else.

Absolute garbage!!
Reviewed: 03-18-24
The only thing worthy of this audiobook is the performance. Everything else is pure garbage!! Overly romanticized yes and maybe that’s been alright if it wasn’t for the constant declarations of love from every vampire to every other vampire with ZERO substance behind it. I get that as a series becomes popular, each new book probably will make some continuity errors but damn, this just has too many examples. Also, I just couldn’t finish because of all the descriptions of what amounts to fetishized acts of love…not just the substance less declarations but c’mon now, how many times are we to suffer through male/male or male/parent and even a few adult/child acts of physical affection before anything actually happens?!! This is NOT a series of action and I enjoy that but sometimes you have to have something other than the stated thoughts of the characters. Halfway through this I stopped and couldn’t continue because it’s just horrible!! Only reason I got this far into the series is because in the late ‘90’s I had the luck for a semi-private after hours meet & greet with Anne Rice at a bookstore I worked at and I hadn’t yet read anything from her. Sorry Ms. Rice but I just can’t stand your work. Maybe your later novels in the series might make up for this drivel but I won’t know. Thankfully Audible.com was kind enough to “return” what I had of hers for the credits I used.

This is most certainly NOT a book of action.
Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Anne Rice in 1996 when she did an after hours meet & greet at a now defunct bookstore I worked in in Oak Park, IL. Honestly, you’d never guess from her outwardly demeanor how dark her novels are. But I have to say, despite a different style of person that she and I are, I am not a fan of the homosexual and brief parts of incest between Lestat and Gabrielle…the book would’ve been the same without.
Decent character development but also very much overly done so. Too many references to “love” and some variation of the ultimate example of some emotion that after awhile, it becomes meaningless.
The section that centered on Armand was excessively bad. Not in skill of writing nor description but of content. Despite having met her years ago, I wonder where her mind was when she came up with this.
After all that, I did like how future books and characters have been set up. What concerns me however is that in Anne’s personal life throughout writing this series I know she changed her religious and spiritual beliefs a few times and I’m hoping she was able to keep most of that change out of her future books in the series.
For example: in INTERVIEW, Claudia’s existence and the concept of INTERVIEW goes directly against the “laws” written in this book. Maybe it was intentional as a way to indicate Lestat’s character flaws but I’ve a suspicion she wrote it in like that after the publication of INTERVIEW.
Anyway, here’s to hoping the series picks up.

Story
We are in a small room with the vampire, face to face, as he speaks--as he pours out the hypnotic, shocking, moving, and erotically charged confessions of his first two hundred years as one of the living dead. . . He speaks quietly, plainly, even gently . . . carrying us back to the night when he departed human existence as heir--young, romantic, cultivated--to a great Louisiana plantation, and was inducted by the radiant and sinister Lestat into the other, the "endless," life....

Just about 70% is nothing but descriptive drivel. Also, I can’t get past the notion of what people’s concept of love is…there is some mediocre character development but nothing in terms of foundations of love and yet way too many proclamations to make it remotely believable.

I actually feel smarter for having listened to this book. Enough science to keep you engaged but with more everyday explanations and absolutely great examples (except for maybe the clown thing towards the end) provided to push home the points spoken of.
At first I thought it just be a run of the mill science book because it was not as long as I’d thought but there’s just so much information packed it and none of it seems filler information, it’s all relevant to the topic of the chapter.
Definitely one of my top 3 favorite science books!!
