Distracting narration
Reviewed: 08-22-24
The story was okay. But, the voice acting made it difficult to stay in the narrative. Every voice was the same and some words were so over-pronounced that they became the focus.

Story
A skeleton is found in a shallow grave in the churchyard. But this was not an official burial. The victim was murdered decades ago. At the same time, Detective Nikki Galena and her team are investigating the brutal slaying of local businesswoman Madeline Prospero. She was a member of an exclusive and secretive drinking club called The Briar Patch. But they've got no suspects and no one is telling them the truth. Meanwhile, the buried skeleton leads them on a trail to the village of Quintin Eaudyke. This is a troubled place. In the late 70s and 80s a reign of terror was unleashed.

Story
Those who have had a narcissistic parent can testify to how damaging it can be to one's psyche. Narcissistic parents lack empathy, show a severe sense of entitlement to micromanage the lives of their children, and often subject their children to neglect, as well as emotional, psychological, and physical abuse. From the unique challenges daughters of narcissistic fathers face to the ways in which adverse childhood experiences affect our brains, Shahida Arabi's insightful essays resonate deeply with those who have been raised by narcissistic parents.

I am a survivor of childhood narcissistic abuse, and am also a clinical psychologist. I benefitted greatly from this book, and shared it with my sister. Shahida Arabi thoroughly and accurately describes the dynamics in these abusive families, and provides helpful information on how to heal and set boundaries.

There's never a good time for a ghost crisis. However, it's particularly inconvenient while I'm trying to tackle my first wedding season. Between 12-hour days, an assistant with a case of butterfingers (not the chocolate kind), and the flood of tourists in town, I'm struggling to keep a grip on my sanity. All I want is three months of peace from the spirit world. But when local ghosts start going missing, I have to do something.

Bronson Pinchot is no Macleod Andrews. As with previous books, the story was entertaining. BUT, the character voices absolutely ruined the experience … especially the voice of Forrest Gump.
