An Excercise in Leadership
Reviewed: 05-06-21
If I had been given the task of working with a class of students on the subject of leadership - be it any profession - I would require this book as part of an assigned reading list. Forester's skill in revealing the internal doubts of Commander Krause in the face of unrelenting stress continually amazes me. I believe Eduardo Ballerini was the perfect choice for the reader. I was captivated by the story and the narration.

July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

Reveals Something New With Every Read
Reviewed: 03-26-21
I have read the text edition and the audio edition many times. Nothing seems to compare with it for depth, breadth, and the power of Shaara's description of the human condition.
I have personally taken the guided tour of the battlefield at Gettysburg Memorial National Park. The volunteer guide who accompanied us worth every cent of the extra cost. When he realized I wanted to go to Little Round Top, he made sure I had the time to make that part of the tour the highlight. Gazing down on the ground that the rebel troops had to move to take the hill, I tried hard to put myself in the place of Chamberlain on that fateful day.
This book is one of the reasons I so love historical novels.

Story
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.
