Story
What do we really know about modern practicing polygamists - not fictional ones like the Henrickson family on HBO’s Big Love? We’ve seen the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the news, the underage brides in pioneer dresses on a Texas ranch. But the FLDS is just one of many groups that have broken with mainstream Mormonism to follow those parts of Joseph Smith’s doctrine disavowed by the LDS Church. Gaining unprecedented access to these communities, journalist Sanjiv Bhattacharya reveals a shadow country....

Thoughtful, detailed, compassionate - one of my favorite books on the topic for sure!

This is a really exceptional book. It's such a thoughtful and nuanced handling of the topic of polygamy and Mormon fundamentalism more broadly, while still being conversational and even funny. Reading this book feels like chatting with your best friend about the research project they're doing for work. After reading dozens of memoirs and personal stories from fundamentalist Mormons, I've found this is the book that ties them all together. Bravo.

I definitely struggled to finish this one. It is repetitive and not particularly insightful. It's also not very evidence based. Most of his "proof" is just personal anecdotes.
