Story
When Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, is caught on video just minutes before the youngest son of international black-market arms dealer Alexander Ramos is shot and killed, he’s instantly identified as suspect number one. He’s at the scene, he’s with the victim, and he’s former special forces turned soldier of fortune. He has a blue-chip stock portfolio and no known address. He moves in mysterious circles. He’s Stephanie’s mentor—the man who taught her everything she knows about fugitive apprehension. And he's more than her friend.

This could have been a real story. The cruelty of this time period as created by the Nazis was unimaginable to those of us who were fortunate not to have been born in this time and lived in Germany and the surrounding countries.

Travis Devine has become a pro at accomplishing any mission he's given. But this time it’s not his skills that send him to Seattle to aid the FBI in escorting orphaned, twelve-year-old Betsy Odom to a meeting with her uncle, who’s under federal investigation. Instead, he’s hoping to lay low and keep off the radar of an enemy–the girl on the train. But as Devine gets to know Betsy, questions begin to arise around the death of her parents.

Renée Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet twenty years ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the city of angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles. Meanwhile, Ballard’s badge, gun, and ID are stolen.

Raised in the wilderness by her late great-uncle, Vida is a young woman with an almost preternatural affinity for nature, especially for the wolves that also call the forested mountains home. Formed by hard experience, by love and loss, and by the prophecies of a fortuneteller, Vida just wants peace. If only nearby Kettleton County didn’t cast such a dark shadow.

Time Period Description

Not much of a story. Still, the novel was engrossing and made so by the author’s description of the time. Although I lived and worked through this period I was not exposed to the difficulties and prejudice black people faced. It was an education.
