Story
Getting our hands on this source material was dangerous, legally questionable, and career-threatening, but I felt it was worth the risk–these aren’t just Hollywood outtakes, folks, these are far-out-takes. Did Duke and JFK have a reckoning in the Oval Office? Did Yoda have anger issues? Did Sean Connery struggle with crappy dentures? The answers to these–and many more unanswered questions–lay within the treasure trove of The Lost Recordings, Vol. 1: Hollywood.

Story
William Barclay "Bat" Masterson spent the first half of his adult life in the West, planting the seeds for his later legend as he moved from Texas to Kansas and then Colorado. In Denver, his gambling habit and combative nature drew him to the still-developing sport of prizefighting. Masterson attended almost every important match in the United States from the 1880s to 1921, first as a professional gambler betting on the bouts, and later as a promoter and referee. Ultimately, Bat stumbled into writing about the sport.

When love reigns supreme in Northridge High just outside Chicago, by the lake, it happens beneath the soft, pink-infused spotlights hovering over that most special night of the year - prom night. Passable in Pink is an Audible Original from New York Times best-selling author Mike Sacks (Stinker Lets Loose!). Sacks has teamed up once again with director Eric Jason Martin (Stinker Lets Loose!, Heads Will Roll) to adapt a forgotten John Hughes-type 1983 movie into a fully immersive cinematic audio experience, with an epic all-star cast.

Mike Sacks absolutely nails the absurd and wonderful world of the 1980s. From fashion fads to pop culture obsessions, "Passable in Pink" made me laugh out loud. Sacks has a wicked sense of humor and the audiobook's narration brings it to life perfectly. This is a must-listen for anyone who grew up in the '80s or just loves a good dose of nostalgic humor.

a hilarious Drive-in road movie for your ears.
Reviewed: 04-17-24
Being able to be the guy who translated this cinematic masterpiece that was lost forever to the ears of today is quite an accomplishment, but Eric Martin uses the genius works of Mike Sacks (and the Terence Mann-like) James Taylor Johnston masterfully. I love the way the Dukes of Hazzard type music bookmarks the chapters. It is a real pick me up and becomes something I looked forward to while listening. Jon Hamm is so good in this. Word is that his father worked in the trucking business and I feel like he really embraced the character and shined in this. Give it a shot if you like to laugh and if you like great things. Mike Sacks is a hilarious writer.

Story
Mild-mannered sheep farmer Albert Stark is fed up with the harsh life of the American frontier, where it seems everything and anything can kill you: Duels at high noon. Barroom brawls. Poisonous snakes. Cholera-infected drinking water. Tumbleweed abrasion. Something called “toe-foot.” Even a trip to the outhouse. Yes, there are a million ways to die in the wild, wild West, and Albert plans to avoid them all. Some people think that makes him a coward. Albert calls it common sense.

The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

Story
When NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt, Jr., retired from professional stock car racing in 2017, he walked away from his career as a healthy man. But for years, he had worried that the worsening effects of multiple racing-related concussions would end not only his time on the track but his ability to live a full and happy life. Torn between a race-at-all-costs culture and the fear that something was terribly wrong, Earnhardt tried to pretend everything was fine, but the private notes about his escalating symptoms that he kept on his phone reveal a vicious cycle.

Not enough here for a book.
Reviewed: 05-23-20
I guess because Jr. had these concussion problems he is supposed to get a pass for publishing a book he put very minimal effort into writing. The concussion problems are the whole book. He talks a little about the Earnhardt family history which is so far and away the best part of the book it isnt even funny. Notes off your phone? There is nothing here. Repetitive and boring. I wish he wrote about something that makes him happy instead of this which read like a book report he had to do. Returning this one.
