By the age of only 26, Bonanno became a don. He eventually took over the New York underworld, igniting the "Castellammarese War", one of the bloodiest Family battles ever to hit New York City.

Interesting book
Reviewed: 12-19-24
A great read/listen because of Bonanno's feelings on the mafia and his part in it. He makes a lot of sense about the "family"part of what the mafia was for him and many of the founders of the mob. But he made his mafia experience as docile and respectful as a church would be. He seemed to be a great guy and a man you'd like to have coffee with, however, its obvious he lied a fair amount in the book, and when someone lies about a topic or two, you cannot believe anything he says. Thus, this tarnishes this book. However it was an interesting book that I'm glad I digested.

Story
John Gotti was without a doubt the flashiest and most feared Mafioso in American history. He became the boss of the Gambino Crime Family in spectacular fashion—with the brazen and very public murder of Paul Castellano in front of Sparks Steakhouse in midtown Manhattan in 1985. Not one to stay below law enforcement’s radar, Gotti instead became the first celebrity crime boss. His penchant for eye-catching apparel earned him the nickname “The Dapper Don;” his ability to beat criminal charges led to another: “The Teflon Don.”

Good book and an eye opener
Reviewed: 12-01-24
A good listen and quite a detail oriented book. Everything you want to know about getting Gotti was in the text. I liked the author in the first quarter, mainly because of his humility but lost my luster for him as the book continued. The author, an attorney, went on to become not so humble as the book went on and a bit full of himself.
Many have wondered how the famous turncoat/witness, Sammy the Bull Gravano only got five tears for being involved in 19 murders. Everyone blamed the judge. This book shows that Gleeson had very much to do with it. It was clear that Gravano conned many people with his style and glibness, including Gleeson. But Gotti went down and so did many others--A good thing.

The Mob was the biggest, richest business in America...until it was destroyed from within by drugs, greed, and the decline of its traditional crime family values. And by guys like Sal Polisi. As a member of New York's feared Colombo Family, Polisi ran the Sinatra Club, an illegal after-hours gambling den that was a magic kingdom of crime and a hangout for up-and-coming mobsters. But the nonstop thrills of Polisi's criminal glory days abruptly ended.

Very well put together, superbly narrated and an absolute fantastic detail oriented story of everything Mob. If someone is interested in anything mafia, this is simply a must. The book shows the absolute disgusting person that Polisi was and no matter what he may have done since leaving the life, still must be. He was a continuous con, liar, rat (even before he was an official government rat) but a rat to his fellow mob 'friends' for years. Polisi shows the utter despicabiity of mobsters. A very true portrayal of mobsters, mafia and career criminals. I've never read a better 'picture' of the mob and mobsters.

Mafia Prince is the first-person account of one of the most violent eras in Mafia history - "Little" Nicky Scarfo’s reign as boss of the Philly family in the 1980s - written by Scarfo’s underboss and nephew, "Crazy" Phil Leonetti. The youngest-ever underboss at the age of 31, Leonetti was at the crux of the violent downfall of the traditional American Mafia in the 1980s when he infiltrated Atlantic City after gambling was legalized, and later turned state’s evidence against his own.

Here is the critically acclaimed inside story, now in an expanded edition, about the rise and fall of Philadelphia's notorious Scarfo organization. Blunt and unsparing, it is a firsthand account of murder, money, and corruption told by wiseguy-turned-witness Nick Caramandi, whose testimony put Nicky Scarfo and many of his associates behind bars for the rest of their lives. In this updated edition of Blood and Honor, author George Anastasia picks up the story where he left off, filling us in on the fates of all the characters - major and minor - in recent years.

Story
Since 1929, Hollywood’s brightest stars have flocked to the Chateau Marmont as if it were a second home. An apartment building-turned-hotel, the Chateau has been the backdrop for generations of gossip and folklore: where director Nicholas Ray slept with his 16-year-old Rebel Without a Cause star Natalie Wood; Jim Morrison swung from the balconies; John Belushi suffered a fatal overdose; and Lindsay Lohan got the boot after racking up nearly $50,000 in charges in less than two months. Much of what has happened inside the Chateau’s walls has eluded the public eye - until now.

I found this writer reading another one of his books,The Rat Pack. I was so impressed with how he put separate stories together that I had to try another one of his books. After reading this book, and being captivated throughout, I think this author is my latest favorite author. Well pieced together with deep meaning within the stories that make up this awesome reading/listening experience. The narrator was superb.

Story
Never in history, until now, have we been able to hear from so many people around the world who have been brought back from clinical death. Modern medical resuscitation and digital communication have revealed a goldmine of intriguing near-death experiences (NDEs) that show us the character of God. John Burke has spent the last three decades studying the commonalities of more than 1000 NDEs. His investigative journey started as a skeptical agnostic, when his own father was dying from cancer.

While the book had a good storyline it felt a bit too much like attending a Sunday church sermon. For me, it would have been better if just the facts would have been presented without the emotional over explanations of the near death experiences and the authors opinions of them.

Frank Sinatra. Dean Martin. Sammy Davis, Jr. Peter Lawford. Joey Bishop. They call themselves The Clan. But to an awed world, they are known as The Rat Pack. They had it all. Fame. Gorgeous women. A fabulous playground of a city and all the money in the world. The backing of fearsome crime lords and the blessing of the President of the United States. But the dark side - over the thin line between pleasure and debauchery, between swinging self-confidence and brutal arrogance - took its toll. In four years, their great ride was over, and showbiz was never the same.

Suffering from severe spinal and head injuries, Rynes knew she was dying. At that moment, she underwent the first of two life-changing near-death experiences - her consciousness split between her frightened, injured self lying on the road, and an impartial, peaceful observer-consciousness who watched as first responders fought to keep her alive. Her second, more lengthy near-death experience came days later, during the surgery that attempted to repair her traumatized spine.
