Story
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

(Some of) The good of it -
More of a well loved world and its people.. New characters, and old favorites, new possibilities and old issues, and both hidden gems and traps revealed etc etc etc. Never a boring moment. Thank you DH.
Not so good -
This book in the series languishes much too long in well tread storylines, adding little to their dimension. Too many major characters from the past play significant roles in this book and crowd out the new characters ability to become half as interesting.
To be seen, but already believed -
There are more volumes to come, even if only judging by the so very predictable events in the last pages/minutes of The Black Bird Oracle. I do look forward to them, and I’m confident that they’ll be well worth their cost of time and coin.

Such cliffhangers!!!
Reviewed: 02-25-22
I’m very much enjoying the series so far, but the cliffhangers are rough! And it’s months before the next book comes out. -pout-
It’s good writing and very good storytelling with suspense, comedy, mystery, drama, romance, and a few other things mixed in.

Story
I can't close my eyes...I refuse to. Every time I do, all I see is blood, death, and pain. I can feel it - almost taste it, bringing me back to that night. It doesn't matter that I'm still breathing; I no longer need it, I no longer want it. I despise it along with everything else around me. The only thing I long for is to f--king fade away. I've given up. Until her at least...Avalon. She comes into my world, knocking me on my ass. Once she sees the damage that I'm capable of; she'll look at me like everyone else around me does: with fear.

Melodramatic but good
Reviewed: 07-11-19
I enjoyed this story, despite it’s being occasionally overly melodramatic in the extreme at points. Overall it’s very sweet and the supporting characters do a lot to lighten up otherwise very brooding internal monologues of the primary couple.
My only caution is that though there are multiple short scenes of violence (mostly fist fights between angry guys) throughout there is one longer very descriptive, bloody and ugly scene that though referenced to earlier in the book, did kind of sneak up and surprise me when it landed. I’m sure it’s too much for some, but really I think anyone who would be troubled by such writing would probably not choose this story in the first place or put it down before it got to the “origin story” portion of the book.

Story
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

This was easily my least favorite of all the books to this point. So much so that I put it down for a year or so before getting through it the second time.
My biggest problem was that unlike most of the others the whole story was singularly focused on the main mystery, and it was a dull trek to a sad ending that did not satisfy in the least. I would grade it even lower than the three stars I gave it except for my love of the characters and the quality of the writing aside from the story that the writing gave. I'm hoping the next volume is much better.

At first I thought I had set the audio to read faster than the normal pace, then I was just frustrated by the narrator for reading so quickly and with almost zero affect, but by that time the story was drawing me in. I'm not sure if the narrator ever actually slowed down or I just got used to it but what I initially was irritated by became more an aspect of a first person voice of an investigative reporter and fit the story overall.
I do plan on spending my next two credits on the sequels but I'm very disappointed to find that the last two books in the series as well as the prequel are not available as audiobooks now. Especially because the series I was listening to before this has the same problem. It's extremely frustrating to find a likable series and then find that some but not all of the series on Audible.

Delivering a rare book to a valued customer is definitely part of mild-mannered archivist Anna Whitfield's job description. You know what isn't? Protecting her precious cargo from midflight theft by the very pilot who is flying her to Half-Moon Hollow...while trying to appear as unappetizing as possible to the only other passenger, a vampire. Undead bookstore owner Jane Jameson could be waiting a very long time for her book. Possibly forever.

I have the greatest affection for each of the works from Ms. Harper, and this is no exception. Every episode in the world she's created makes me laugh, sigh, and wish for more from the moment it concludes. As always Ms. Ronconi's narration perfection and is quintessential to the wonderful audio version of each tale. I couldn't imagine one with her. They are excellently paired.
My only complaint is that I wish there were more stories that featured already introduced characters in the main plot lines rather than always introducing new characters that are often quite similar to old favorites. Though, it's only fair to say that this book and her last short story do a lot to keep several familiar faces involved. I'm hopeful that the possible foreshadowing at the end of this story means that we might soon be reading another story that bridges her Alaskan werewolf characters with the many supernatural folks from the Kentucky set. Still I hope that someday she will br

I was less than impressed. Neither the story, its characters, or the narrator were very interesting. A really good story will make you become invested in the lives of its characters regardless of the story, but by the end of this one I didn't care at all about any of them. Skip this book, there are so many better ones to enjoy.

Story
When Papa Pilgrim appeared in the Alaska frontier outpost of McCarthy with his wife and fifteen children in tow, his new neighbors had little idea of the trouble to come. The Pilgrim Family presented themselves as a shining example of the homespun Christian ideal, with their proud piety and beautiful old-timey music, but their true story ran dark and deep.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It's non fiction, there aren't really "characters", they were/are real people.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Fred Sanders?
Anyone!
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story is good, but it's ruined by the reading.
Any additional comments?
No.
