Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

I didn't understand when I downloaded this book that it would actually be a total condemnation of the Catholic Church -- honestly, a subject I couldn't care less about. However, when placed within the context of Western history, I found it spellbinding (pun intended.)
The author makes an exhaustive case (which I did find exhausting at some points), against the Church and what Christianity has been up to since the time of Christ. The author is a lawyer
I guess it took a lawyer's tenacity and determination to gather such a mountain of evidence.
Amazing read. Highly recommend.

Story
In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival. Of the 300 men who had embarked on the journey, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

I enjoyed what was ultimately a very optimistic read. The author jumps around to different times, places and groups of people, which can make it a bit hard to follow sometimes. Still, I appreciated the attempt to span such a long period, which I believe is necessary if you are going to tell a meaningful story about climate change. Overall, I think the book was well done.

Story
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

Fantastic Book

The impact of slavery in the individual lives enslaved African Americans, the economic domination of the Southern states in the early 19th Century, and the near lawless of banking in the early years of the Republic are topics that I almost never hear discussed. Baptist's treatment of the politics and politicians of the day, how slave owners brought the same spirit of total domination over slaves into the political arena, and of how the entire economy of the United States was built on the backs of enslaved peoples is a remarkable story that deserves much more prominence in how mainstream American history is taught.
It makes me want to know much more about this period of our history. Also, the narrator is great. He skillfully mimicked many different dialects, and he was engaging to listen to.

Acuff knows the reason why many writers' novels go unfinished - it's the same reason why gyms are filled in the first week of January and empty by the end of the month and why people stop learning a new language once they get past the easy parts. It's not just that people lose momentum or get distracted. People give up on projects when they fail to live up to their own high expectations and decide that if they can't do something perfectly, they won't do it at all. If you're going to finish, you have to kill perfectionism.

I really appreciate the way this book discourages perfection, and uses data/research to show why setting our goals below perfect means we have a better chance of success.
