Story
Actress Cameron Madden is sick and tired of being tired. With her last movie failing at the box office and her career in question, she heads to Aspen Cove to lick her wounds. The small mountain town is the perfect place to escape the prying eyes of a critical public, the demands of her career, and the rules set by her team. Expecting a female bodyguard named Valery, she's shocked to find the script has been flipped and Valery is a tall, dark, and annoying man who goes by Val. The first thing he does is hand her a set of rules—his rules. And she plans to break every one of them.

Delightful!

I found this story absolutely delightful. It definitely provided many smiles and giggles throughout and Cameron and Val were a perfect pair. He certainly wasn’t what she was expecting and she wasn’t what he was either however fate always seems to have its way. Things don’t happen easily for them, but what’s the fun in that?! The fact of the matter is that the book is well written and totally enjoyable and well worth listening to. Logan McAllister, once again, does an exceptional job with the narration. Thank you Ms Collins for giving me the opportunity to listen to this wonderful book.

Story
The Swim is not one of my usual mysteries featuring former police detective Michael McLaren. It's a prequel novella giving a picture of his life from teenager to the strong man he is today. He's real to me, and I want you to understand him. I want you to understand a man whose need to help others find justice became his incitement in a world like today. He's been through a lot from his ordeal beginning with the "swim", his move from the Force, and his cold cases. He's made enemies, friends, and he has loved and lost. Like many of us.

This novella was thoroughly entertaining from beginning to end. It began with young McLaren and his nail biting experience with his friends. It was an emotional beginning and as the story progresses it was interesting to hear Mike’s life story and what a loving and giving person he was and still is. I totally enjoyed this wonderful novella and listened to it in one sitting as it was difficult to put down. Callum Hale is a brilliant narrator and he adds so much to the listening experience. I definitely recommend this amazing story, as well as the entire McLaren series.

Story
Former police detective Michael McLaren is at the home of his lady friend, Melanie. The house is sold, the removal van is booked. All that is left is to help her pack her belongings for her move to his village. But the laborious task is interrupted when one of Melanie’s neighbors asks McLaren to investigate the circumstances of her parents’ murders. McLaren’s reluctance to take it on and abandon Melanie appears to be solved when his best mate, Jamie, steps in to help with the packing. It’s not the easy investigation McLaren was hoping for, however.

Suspense At Its Best!
Reviewed: 05-13-24
The Cottage is another nail biting suspense in the McLaren Mystery Series. Mike is helping his lady love, Melanie, pack up her possessions as she prepares to move into her new home in his village. However, as usual, he is drawn into looking into a murder mystery. This time one of Melanie’s neighbours asks him to look into the murder and of her parents. His friend, Jamie, ends up coming to help with the packing while Mike is working on the case and, needless to say, things eventually get complicated. There are always some good twists and turns to maneuver, as well as some chuckles, and this one has some heart tugging scenes that will have you reaching for some tissues. I found this book very difficult to put down. Callum Hale never ceases to amaze me with his amazing ability to make each character sound unique and memorable. The emotion he puts into the appropriate scenes is unsurpassed. Kudos to both the author and narrator on this one. I can highly recommend it!

She has a secret. He needs the truth. Is it possible to rekindle a love gone wrong? Veterinarian Sara Arden made a mistake when she was a sixteen-year-old girl. The mistake wasn’t in falling in love with rancher Lloyd Dawson. It wasn’t even in getting pregnant. Sure, that part could have waited, but the mistake was in never telling him she had his daughter. Now, thirty-two years later, she’s back in Aspen Cove with her daughter, Reese. And this time, there won’t be any denying the truth.

We all deserve another chance at love when our first love is lost, no matter the circumstances. Sara and Lloyd had a teenage affair however things didn’t turn out for them and thirty-two years later they are brought back together. Will their love still be strong enough to give them another chance? This is such a heartwarming and beautiful story. I loved all the wonderful characters introduced in this story, new and old. It was fun, exciting and sweet and Logan McAllister does an exceptional job narrating it, as usual. I am more than happy to recommend it. Intriguing Tale!
Reviewed: 01-16-24
One of my favourite mystery authors is back with another intriguing tale of murder, danger and suspense and the icing on top is that it is narrated brilliantly by Callum Hale. Jo Hiestand is an author that keeps on giving with her richly detailed scenes that make you feel like you are part of the story. We are taken on a journey to Scotland with Michael and his lady love, Melanie for Christmas with his grandfather and uncle. While there, not surprisingly, Michael is drawn into having to solve a cold case. As usual there are many twists and turns and it’s always surprising and quite intriguing how Michael comes up with his conclusions and discovers the guilty party. The action begins right at the beginning of this story and continues throughout. There is also some romance thrown into the mix with a lovely ending. I have to say that this was definitely one of my favorite McLaren books of the series. I highly recommend this one, whether or not you have listened to any of the others. Callum Hale never ceases to amaze me with his numerous voices and accents, and all done so brilliantly. I look forward to the next book in the series.

One Hundred Decisions, Book 13, was one of my favourites of the series. Natalie has had a rough life and has just taken on the responsibility of a twelve year old brother she just found out she had. It’s inspirational how strong and selfless she is as she cares for her brother and others in the community. She expects nothing in return and is surprised when the town comes together to help her out when she stands to lose her brother to the social service system. Jake is a wonderful partner for Natalie and it is interesting to see their relationship develop as well as their relationship with Will. This was a sweet and inspirational story that I will definitely listen to again.
One Hundred Glances, Book 14, was another inspirational story, reminding us to never give up even when life takes us in a different direction than we hoped for. Sosie Grant and Baxter Black both find themselves in predicaments not of their choosing, however they end up together, with the help of a special community member. I really enjoyed the development of this story and the relationship between Sosie and Baxter. Definitely another one I will be listening to again.
One Hundred Lessons, Book 15, was a touching, humorous and thoroughly entertaining story! At first I wasn’t sure I really liked Alex much however he soon redeemed himself and I was rooting for him and Mercy to have their HEA. My heart went out to Mercy for all she had gone through and I was glad that she found Alex and Maddie. Of course little Maddie captured my heart right away. This was such a sweet and touching story with some really humorous situations.
Logan McAllister never disappoints with his exemplary narration. His voices and emotions are spot on and he makes the whole listening experience absolutely perfect. Kudos to both author and narrator on this collection.

Story
Cameron Rutter drowned two months ago in a lake on a Cheshire moor. Some say a morgen—a spirit who drags men to a watery grave—was responsible. Others say it was the phantom Grey Lady. The police say Gareth Gynne was the guilty one. Whoever—or whatever—killed Cameron needs to be sorted out. And ex-police detective Michael McLaren is asked to do just that.

This is an extraordinary mystery with an equally extraordinary narrator! This story grabbed me right from the beginning with Jamie asking for Mike’s assistance with an investigation of a serial killer that has the constabulary stumped. The plot is intriguing and as usual Ms Hiestand adds a bit of humor and romance to the mix to help relieve a bit of the nail biting suspense. This is definitely one of my favorite McLaren stories! And speaking of favorites; Callum is spot on with all the voices and emotions for all the various characters in the story. He is easily one of my favorite narrators. He makes listening such a pleasant experience and draws you into the story as if you are right there with the characters. This is definitely a book I will be recommending and listening to again!
