In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don't speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling. “I say, she says, I say, he says, I say….” This got on my
Nerves. Like she asks a question followed by “I say” instead of “I ask,” even just to change it up. Anyway. Good procedural. Good narrator.

Slow burn, great narrator
Reviewed: 10-06-24
There was a brief moment where I almost bailed on this book but the narrator tends to go for excellent novels so I kept on and very glad I did! I figured out the ending about mid way, but even so, still a good ending.

The private underworld of teenage girls turns out to be more mysterious and more dangerous than the detectives imagined.

Not so great
Reviewed: 06-02-24
Hogan is a great narrator but I was confused because he was Scorcher Kennedy in the previous book. At first I was thinking the same character was in the secret place.
Hutchinson is flat and makes it hard to differentiate between characters. I also think the teens deserve a bit more credit intellectually. They can’t all be so vapid and predictable, personality-wise, can they?
I love Tana French, she’s one of my top 5 favorite authors, but this book was hard to stay with. I listened several times to the same chapters trying to keep it straight and stay engaged. Almost gave up. Right now I have 4 hours remaining and I will finish it— I’ll update this review if my opinion changes.

I found this book to be pretty dull, but I am assuming (hoping) it was solely for the sake of character development and the rest will be more … interesting, engaging, surprising, scary..

First, amazing narration, very strong writing, compelling characters, and surprising/engaging tho believable plot.. as always.
Second, re: negative reviews saying the book is graphic, and possibly triggering… That is true. But frankly, it’s pretty realistic, and if you do not like to read crime thrillers, try a different genre. This story, and others of KS’s, represents what can actually happen in police work but the novel is much more than that- it includes love, complicated relationships, strong women (and men) who persevere through dramatic conflict. Serial killers, etc. do some pretty unspeakable things, but it’s all part of human nature and the human experience, which is compelling to some of us, and can be too much for others. KS writes these stories in an honest and vulnerable way; she is able to write about some of the most difficult subjects in a way that is as objective as possible, paired with reactions that are logical for the characters she’s created.

This is an important and masterfully told story of a difficult time in our nations history. In particular I love the perspective of women who have too often been brushed aside, undervalued, and demeaned throughout ALL of human history. It brings tears to my Eyes to think how far women have come thanks to the trail blazing of the fiercest and resilient women of all time, in many different times and contexts, who were just trying to do the right thing the best they could. Julia whelan, as always, is a master narrator.

I saw a couple say they couldn’t get into the book bc they Mia was not likable. I disagree. She wasn’t a girlie girl, but she knew how to get shit done just like a bazillion male characters— think of James Bond. Was he a good guy? Not really — not saying she was like him in really any way… but she was REAL. And she did what was necessary to protect those she loved… and stand up for her moral character. Great story with a pleasantly unpredictable ending. I applaud that it didn’t how how almost all other books end.

It’s one thing to shed a tear but the ending of this book has me actually sobbing, hitching.
I was totally fooled.. I can usually figure out the mystery in just about every story, or pretty close but not The Ursulina! There were times when I got kinda mad at Rebecca bc there were ways around her problems, rather than barreling thru the deepest of the mud, But I guess it would not have been as suspenseful and intriguing if everything she did was logical. Lol good book. Check it out. Definitely read the first one first tho! Necessary to fully “get” the second.

Bad accents 🤨
Reviewed: 01-24-24
I usually love this narrator (I’ve even listened to several other books bc Caroline Lee is the narrator), however her American accents are SO BAD.. not all Americans are southern (if that’s what this is meant to be)— it actually come off as derogatory somehow. I have a hard find focusing on the story when the Americans or Irish turn up bc of the horrible accents. I liked the first two books in this series but this 3rd book drags; seems stuck (I’m about halfway in); I’m sure (I hope) bit’ll get better but to this point I keep having to relisten to parts bc my mind wanders and I miss it. 🤷🏻♀️
Surprised there are so many rave reviews. I’m guessing those people are Australian and perhaps the accents seems right to them?

Cassie Forrest could almost believe life at Kingdom Come Farm is perfect, with Adrian and her friends at her side and spring on the way. The spring thaw also means millions of defrosting zombies, however, and if the past year has taught her anything, it's that life in this new world is highly imperfect. When Safe Zones throughout the country begin to disappear and the zombies at the fences grow in number, Cassie clings to the hope that if she has the people she loves most, it will be all right.

1. I don’t generally get that excited about zombie stories but the difference is this is a “human” story first.
2. I can’t imagine anyone other than my fav narrator Julia Whelan reading this book. Her ability to convey Cass’s snarky sense of humor is so perfect, it almost seems like the character was written for her; just goes to show her depth and expertise as a narrator.
3. This series is so good, I’m on my second time thru. Listened a year or so ago for the first time.
