Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Corny

I’m not looking for a steamy romance but I’m also not interested in corny teenage dating scenarios. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt but the dialogue between characters felt lame and juvenile to me. Just not my cup of tea. Oh well!

Don’t waste your time
Reviewed: 12-20-22
I was excited to try this series but the writing is so juvenile it’s difficult to ignore. The lead male characters are all written as narcissistic and controlling and the females are weak and excusing of the behaviors cause “love.” It’s gross. A lot of the vernacular and choice of words is repeated SO often or so closely in the story it seems the author has a limited vocabulary which could be contributing to the immature mood of the series. I can’t stand the obvious controlling behavior of the lead males. It sounds like the author is in a similar relationship or has NEVER been in a relationship and believes this is representative of true love. I had to return them mid way through the 2nd novel. Don’t waste your time

Cassandra Parker has a great voice but the CONSTANT rising and falling with every single word is so irritating. It’s not just in appropriate spots or even at the end of a sentence but EVERY WORD. It’s feels like riding a carousel. I’m assuming the cadence was intentional in an attempt to translate the sarcastic attitude of the main character but it was just annoying. Could have been so much better but it made Sloan (the main character) seem juvenile and immature.

Just when I thought life might be getting back to normal—normal being a relative word—I couldn’t have been more wrong. Marriage proposal from the Grim Reaper? Yes. Beautiful healthy baby? Yes. Friends and family safe? Yes. Ghost of my worst enemy sitting on my front porch? OMG. Yep. With the ghostly world imploding around me, I’m going to need more than superglue to repair it.

Thoroughly enjoyed

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Unique idea and not too raunchy. Just enough sexy time/talk to not feel ridiculous. Which is good for someone like me who shares an audible account with teenagers, lol! The repetitive use of some of the phrases, like “I craved his laughter” was way overdone but didn’t deter me from wanting to finish the series. As someone else mentioned, Daisy does seem to transgress to a bit of a juvenile character instead of a 40yr old woman who is growing and changing but again, still worth the listen.

Story
When secretary Colleen Roper becomes pregnant by her boss, Michael, he whisks her away to Ravenwood, his opulent estate. Abruptly thrust into a life of luxury she’s never known, Colleen finds the immense house suffused with the memory of Michael’s wife, Joanna, who left months ago and haunts her imagination. With rooms she’s prohibited from entering and a staff that greets her with hostility, there is little room for a new mistress of Ravenwood. It’s not long before bones are unearthed in the grove across the street and Michael falls under the suspicion of detectives.

I really enjoyed the story but Katelyn Davies as Colleen is a robot & from the first minute I knew her tone was not for me. Her narration is difficult to listen to. Literally has the same inflections in a rhythmic pattern throughout the ENTIRE story and it is all so boring. No emotion just an irritating and constant up and down in her tone.

I found the story line very uninteresting and slow. The reach to connect the past and the present felt like a weak attempt. There was very little character development in anyone. I was hoping for something a little more exciting or intertwined between the two main story lines but this was a let down. Caroline’s husband was an actual psycho and their story was left disappointedly unexplained and just done, without consequences. I feel like so much more could have and should have happened but instead a forced “wrap up” in a nice little bow happened. I’m irritated this book wasted my time and my credit.

Lame
Reviewed: 09-09-20
This has zero character development. It jumps from past to present to future without any warnings so you’re left trying to figure out what’s happening way too often. The narrator does a good job bringing life to inadequate characters. The storyline is slow and lack luster most of the time. It’s basically Twilight. The ending was so blunt and confusing I actually had to rewind to make sure I didn’t accidentally jump ahead or miss something. Nope. It just jumps to the end at a climax and basically says “and they lived happily every after.” So lame.

What started out as a strange assignment leads to one of the most gruesome murder mysteries of our time, and my friends and I are set and determined to find out who is killing off Fae and Witches alike. Couple of problems in the way - I hate the Fae, and the Prince of the Dark Fae is bound and determined that I work for him. He’s a rude, overbearing, egotistical ass with a compulsive need to possess, dominate, and control me. Oh - did I mention that he is absolutely sex-on-a-stick gorgeous and he makes me feel things that I never ever wanted to feel for a Fae....

Limited vocabulary & juvenile writing

I’m pretty sure the word “seductive/seduction” was used no less than 86x’s within the first hour. The descriptions are repetitive (as in, using the exact same words to describe the exact same people, moments, emotions & experiences) & immature. It’s sounds like a 13yr old girl in the throes of new hormones is writing what she imagines to be a sexy story about a “grown” 20 something woman and her desires. It’s ridiculous and cringey. Don’t waste your $ or credits.
