Stop with the accent

This is a sequel. Would it have killed the narrator to listen to a bit of the first book? Why does the main male character sound like Pepe Le Pew? It’s distracting. Someone should have stopped her. It’s the French Revolution with the guillotine killing the accent, over and over.

Zara is beyond ridiculous, supposed to be an intelligent attorney apparently masquerading as an annoying 12-year-old drama queen. She needs competent, intense therapy, because She. Has. Issues. IRL I would try every single excuse possible, no matter how absurd, to flee from any social engagements including Zara. I haven’t a clue why Jay can stand to be in her presence for more 30 seconds. You know she’s the girl who, when her invite to game night gets around suddenly inspires friends to desperately need a quiet evening and skip game night. She isn’t simple, but she habitually acts like a dimwit. Definitely a high maintenance girlfriend. Jay should run away. Change his name. Relocate to another state or, better, country. Find a nice girl who doesn’t require so much care and feeding.

I wanted to like this one. The plot summary was cute. However, midway through the book I was ready to smack the female protagonist. By the end I wanted to throttle her. She was so incredibly self-absorbed. I would never want to be friends with someone who is so focused on herself that she doesn’t even ask her friends about their lives for weeks. I could list the reasons I’d like to push her off a dock, but this review would be too long.

I very much liked the first two books. This one not so much. The ending was sudden. It seemed like Ms Roberts wasn’t finished writing yet, but the agent kept calling about the deadline, so she just slammed the entire climax into a few pages. It was disappointing.

I didn’t enjoy either narrator, the female narrator especially. Her delivery was choppy and clipped. She didn’t seem like she had experience with audiobooks and so she was being careful to over-enunciate. It was tooth-grindingly painful.

The reviews of this book were good. I was looking forward to the audiobook. Ten minutes in, and I am giving up. I cannot believe anyone paid this woman to narrate a book. This is terrible.

Narrator does not do his usual best

The main character is supposed to be an eternal optimist, always happy. I did not realize that meant he was also a dimwit until I listened to the book. Even in serious parts, he sounds like he is on the verge of giggles. Normally, the narrator does an excellent job. This time, though, not so much. I’m the person who laughs at a funeral, but I’m capable of keeping a straight face better than this.

I’m enjoying the story. I am not enjoying the narrator. She makes the main character sound like Dorothy in Oz. It’s annoyingly distracting.

Kate Mulgrew should narrate another book

Kate Mulgrew should narrate another book- as in a different book, not this one. I enjoyed Heart Shaped Box, and I thought Horns was a great read, but NOS4A2 was disappointing. I don't understand all the glowing reviews. I didn't think the novel was anything more than mediocre at best. I expected better, and I was let down. We all know Kate Mulgrew is a talented actress and her narration is top notch. I think it was wasted on what, to me, was not as good as a clearance rack paperback.
