Tried hard to like this but the endless British trivia and apparently pointless plot development finally exceeded my expectations for an interesting mystery and I had to quit.

Story
When Nicholas Elyot and his friends set out to spend the Christmas season in the country, they are prepared for a hard journey in winter. They are also wary of violence on the road, for these are troubled times after the Great Pestilence, when bands of dispossessed and desperate men roam the countryside of England. It is not surprising, therefore, when the troubadours hired to provide entertainment at Leighton Manor are attacked in Wychwood. Yet why should this group draw the attention of outlaws, who are searching for something? Is one of the troubadours not quite what he seems?

The Tenth Clew and Eight Other Continental Op Stories

- Unabridged

Story
This collection consists of nine crime novellas which were originally published in magazine form in 1924. The plots of Hammett’s stories were drawn from his actual experience as a Pinkerton detective. Hammett viewed the process of detective work not as the pursuit of a few elusive clues, but rather the tedious business of extracting relevant evidence from an overabundance of information.

Classic noir but many repeats
Reviewed: 12-05-24
Amazing that these tales are 100 years old. Not so much has changed except a decline in quality of writing and imagination. Many repeats from another Continental Op collection. And why on earth have a female narrator who just reads and doesn’t add character for hard core noir stories?

Story
When Sam Spade gets drawn into the Maltese Falcon case, we know what to expect: straight talk, hard questions, no favors, and no way for anyone to get underneath the protective shell he wears like a second skin. We know that his late partner, Miles Archer, was a son of a bitch; that Spade is sleeping with Archer's wife, Iva; that his tomboyish secretary, Effie Perine, is the only innocent in his life. What we don't know is how Spade became who he is. Spade & Archer completes the picture.

Very good!

This is a great novel that literally ends just where the Falcon begins. In the meanwhile we get to meet Sam Spade as he noirs his way thru several interlocking adventures, so well written that it is just a pleasure to tag along phrase by phrase without being able to turn the book off. Joe Gores was a fine writer of his own detective series and I wish Audible would feature some of his works. Highly recommended.

Macon Fallon had never needed more than a deck of cards, a fast horse, and a ready gun; he was counting on those things now as he led an unsuspecting group of settlers to an abandoned mining town. But while Fallon prepared to pass the ghost town off as a gold mine in the making, a funny thing happened: a real-life community started to take shape in the town he’d christened Red Horse. So when a band of vicious outlaws and a kid who fancied himself a gunslinger threatened to rip Red Horse apart, Fallon found himself caught in one predicament he’d never gambled on.

Reviewed: 10-31-24
The narration is fairly awful. The voice for the self absorbed young girl was very irritating and I was hoping she was going to be an early casualty. The main idea for the series is implausible so any deficiencies really stand out. The only positive is that Thomas Perry always moves the action along so if you’re listening for the purpose of having something diverting as a background noise this works. Nowhere near as good as the butcher’s Boy series.
