Proving the adage that a best seller is almost never followed up with another book as good as the first, Chosen Forever departs from the winning formula of Chosen by a Horse to focus on the neuroses, insecurities, and familial dysfunction of the author. I was hoping for a continuation of her story telling skills about animals. Instead, I got an almost day by day biography of her life after writing Chosen by a Horse, some of it so intimate that I felt like a voyeur.
The corner I kept hoping she'd turn never came.

The horse Susan Richards chose for rescue wouldn't be corralled into her waiting trailer. Instead, Lay Me Down, a former racehorse with a foal close on her heels, walked right up that ramp and into Susan's life. This gentle creature, malnourished, plagued by pneumonia and an eye infection, had endured a rough road, but somehow her heart was still open and generous.

A wonderful story for anyone who loves animals

As one who has a soft spot for all animals, this is a touching story of a woman's efforts to befriend an abused horse, and later, to heal it. Even after finishing the audible book, I continued to think about Lay Me Down, the horse, and the mystical hold that animals have over our lives.

This sweeping history of the Civil War took Foote, who died in 2005, 20 years to write, and it took me over 4 months of listening during my 1-1/2 hour round trip commute to my office. The three volumes represent over 136 hours of listening, every minute of which provides fascinating insights. I found myself actually eager to make my commute and get back to the story. I was sorry when it came to its end. I will undoubtedly listen to it again in the future.
I have been a student of the Civil War all of my life. My great-great grandfather rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest and two of his brothers were killed in the battle for Atlanta where I live among historic markers that tell the story of that struggle that was fought here over 140 years ago.
Every American should read or listen to this epic narrative told by a Mississippi story-teller. His is a balanced account, neither pro-North nor pro-South, a quality sadly lacking in the revisionist histories being produced today.

Well worth it, if you can last

This was my first audio book upon subscribing to Audible. There are other Churchillian biographies but none as comprehensive as this one. I feel like I lived with the guy for the past month! It's worth the listen, but some might rightfully subtitle it "Everything You Didn't Want to Know About Churchill's Life." All said, an heroic work on a complex character, among the most renown figures of the 20th century.

I began listening to this after having listened to Jenkins' Churchill. Thus after listening to almost 40 hours of the mellifluous Churchill narration, Caesar's sounded like a tin can. At points the narration is almost unintelligible, and the quality is distractive. Manchester's work deserved better.
