Story
As snow falls on the small town of Lost Creek, Colorado, a three-year-old boy is found playing quietly in his car seat, his mother, cold as ice, slumped against the steering wheel in front. Tearing herself away from reconnecting with her special-agent father who abandoned her for his career, Detective Madison Harper is haunted by the fear in the boy’s sky blue eyes and vows to find justice for this innocent child, left motherless just days before Christmas.

Entertaining but flawed series

I really enjoy this series but it’s got a few glaring flaws and contrivances.
It feels like every person that so much as shakes the main characters’ hands get murdered. It’s a bit comical at this point.
The cops have to fail at some pretty basic police work in order to move the plot along.
The main detective, Madison, is a very unlikable person. She makes snap judgements about people and overreacts to pretty understandable actions by others’
At one point the other POV character Nate gets a lead on a woman he once lived who was beaten to death because she helped him with his court case.
Madison gets upset and spends the rest of the book pouting about it taking up his attention.
It wouldn’t be so bad if she ever learned lesions or was called out by others but she’s always either rewarded for her actions/feelings or at most gets a pitied “I don’t want you to be sad” speech.

Love the books but the main character can be grating sometimes
Reviewed: 04-18-22
I really enjoy this series. I plan on reading all of them. I’m invested in all the characters, and the mysteries are satisfying.
The narrator is great, she feels perfect for this series.
My only complaint is that sometimes I find myself hating the main character and I’m not sure if it’s intentional on the author’s part.
She’s super judgy all the time, sometimes internally but sometimes audibly.
She makes huge mistakes or overlooks important details. There were several times in this book she would just run with something and I’d find myself thinking “did she ever bother to verify who this person is/if this thing actually happened”
When these things actually end up with consequences for her, she immediately jumps to blaming other people. Saying she’s being set up, when she easily could’ve avoided the problem by taking a different approach.
Overall though this doesn’t hinder my enjoyment.
