Another beautiful and tragic - and most important, captivating! - tale from Kings Lake by the marvelous Peter Grainger. It’s a slow build, but be patient - the rewards are great. Human nature is expertly delineated. Sorrows are plenty. But you’ll never regret time spent with Grainger’s superb, nuanced stories.

Great plot — and brilliant narration by Angus King. There are shocking twists and scenes of immense poignance and pathos. But mostly, it’s about the island - stormy, beautiful, and filled with secrets.

Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

If you love the DC Smith novels by Peter Grainger - as do I - you will celebrate the fact that he’s continued the tales of Kings Lake Central. Smith has retired, but Chris, his protege, steps up. The mystery is a good one, and the narration, as usual, is excellent.

Sunday Forrester lives with her sixteen-year-old daughter, Dolly, in the house she grew up in. She does things more carefully than most people. On quiet days, she must eat only white foods. Her etiquette handbook guides her through confusing social situations, and to escape, she turns to her treasury of Sicilian folklore. The one thing very much out of her control is clever headstrong Dolly, now on the cusp of leaving home. Into this carefully ordered world step Vita and Rollo, a couple who move in next door.

Delicately beautiful novel

There is a lilting, ethereal quality to this novel that is quite entrancing. The narrator’s sensibility is constantly surprising - but always plausible. Highly recommended for those who enjoy the works of Virginia Woolf and Alice McDermott.

Story
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past.
