Story
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Story was a set up for tge next book
Reviewed: 08-20-24
Nothing much happened in this book, the author set up conflict that never resolved or rather it turned out to be not as big a deal as I was expecting from the threat level introduced at the beginning.
It all seem to be preparing for the next installment. Which is fine, but it wasn’t what I was expecting.
That being said, I enjoyed the book very much, I liked seeing Diana on her own and meeting new relatives, learning new magic and getting a glimpse of the twins magic, but compared with the action at the end of the Book of Life, it was a pretty tame story.

Story
Bringing the magic and suspense of the All Souls Trilogy to a deeply satisfying conclusion, this highly anticipated finale went straight to number one on the New York Times best seller list. In The Book of Life, Diana and Matthew time-travel back from Elizabethan London to make a dramatic return to the present - facing new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with the beloved cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches - with one significant exception.

Good conclusion, too much violence for me
Reviewed: 08-16-24
I’ve listened to this book 3 or 4 times now and it didn’t bother me the first few times through but this last time I couldn’t listen again to the terrible violence that was done to a main character at the end. Your mileage may vary!

Forgettable

Literally, lol. I listened to this book from my public library years ago but forgot & bought it here. Now I’m listening again & not 1 single character or plot device is familiar. There are a lot of people with weird names that are hard to keep straight when I can’t see the words on paper but that’s the risk you take when you only hear the book.
The story has yet to really get going, so I hope things will start looking up soon. I love Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson & Alpha series but this earlier story is dragging a bit up front.

Story
Life is busier than ever for Innkeeper Dina DeMille and Sean Evans. But it’s about to get even more chaotic when Sean's werewolf mentor is kidnapped. To find him, they must host an intergalactic spouse-search for one of the most powerful rulers in the Galaxy. Dina is never one to back down from a challenge. That is, if she can manage her temperamental Red Cleaver chef; the consequences of her favorite Galactic ex-tyrant's dark history; the tangled politics of an interstellar nation; and oh, yes, keep the wedding candidates from a dozen alien species from killing each other.

Narrator Okay - Story lags in the middle
Reviewed: 08-22-23
I see others here complain about the narrator but as far as I can tell, the only thing wrong with her performance is that she isn’t Renee Raudman, which isn’t a very fair criticism. Judged on her own, I think she does a great job with all the voices & even uses Renee’s choices as a template for her own. For instance, the voices of the small furry merchant clan characters are remarkably similar. I didn’t have any trouble recognizing who was talking from Renee to Nora.
I agree the little synopsis at the beginning of each chapter was unnecessary in the book. Sometimes it’s not wise to indulge the hardcore fans to that extent, lol.
My main complaint is the middle part of the book. The story starts off with a bang, Sean’s friend has been kidnapped & they need to go rescue him. Then everything comes to a screeching halt when they discover that the only way to get to the planet he’s being held on is to host this Spousal Contest. It made me feel like someone is a big fan of The Bachelor! As I am NOT a fan, the whole middle part just felt like it wasn’t moving the story forward at all. There was only 1 minor attempt to try to tie the 2 stories together & it was over quickly & never mentioned again. And then the story picked up speed with the actual rescue attempt. I think I would have preferred it if an editor had taken a red pen to the contest part & streamlined it severely. A little bit would have been interesting but it went on too long. IMO, YMMV, etc.

Pretty Entertaining
Reviewed: 07-20-23
I’m not a Marvel comic book fan, I don’t know anything about the cannon/history except what I’ve seen in the movies, so take my review with that in mind. This is the 1st audiobook I’ve listened to of any comic book characters.
The narrator did a great job w/Logan’s voice, very characteristic of him & other voices were identifiable too. The story was intriguing, chasing the villains all around the world, & while they were a little 2 dimensional, they were still entertaining. I don’t regret spending a credit for this book although it will likely be a long time before I listen to it again.

The Hobbit is one of the most widely read and best-loved books of the 20th century. Now Professor Corey Olsen takes listeners deep within the text to uncover its secrets and delights. Chapter by chapter, he reveals the stories within the story: the dark desires of dwarves and the sublime laughter of elves, the nature of evil and its hopelessness, the mystery of divine providence and human choice, and, most of all, the transformation within the life of Bilbo Baggins.

Interesting
Reviewed: 07-15-23
The editing could have used more attention as the narration often repeated lines of text but otherwise it was good sound quality w/steady volume levels. Dr. Olsen talked a little faster than I liked but the .07 speed was too slow. As for the content, it was illuminating, pointing out historical facts & vocabulary that gives a different context than modern meaning (crazy = cracked rather than insane) & themes that one might not notice if just reading for pleasure.

New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two—but they’d been equally desperate.

A Hard Subject

I have all the In Death novels & have enjoyed most but some are harder to listen to than others. Therefore, I don’t know if I just wasn’t in the mood for this storyline or if it was really as difficult to listen to as it seemed, but I had to force myself to keep going along towards the end. I don’t believe in book banning, but this topic certainly isn’t for young readers. My stomach hurt from the tension of hearing the awful things done to those fictional girls. FYI.
