Change of pace from original trilogy, but as always… left me wanting more.

Pacing was not quite the break neck clip of the original series. But I enjoyed the story, and development. Eager for the next installment.

I circled back to Red Rising as several more books in the series have been published since I listened to the the first three many years ago. I enjoyed it so much I tore through the audiobook. Often listening when I should have been sleeping, but couldn’t bring myself to turn it off!!

Lost me at Chapter 6
Reviewed: 04-14-21
This production lost me at Chapter 6, "24 Hours". It was so long and vile, and didn't seem to add anything to the story. I'm not saying it should be censored - it just seemed to be a real case of "the juice wasn't worth the squeeze." I think they could have conveyed the hour's worth of misery in 2 minutes and picked up right where six ends and seven starts.
Overall impact, is I lost faith that I would enjoy the rest and returned the book two chapters later (despite having been fairly into it up until that point).

Love the outsourced universe! Great first entry
Reviewed: 03-31-20
I really enjoy what Shadow Alley Press has done here. By deploying multiple authors they have created a huge universe in a relatively short period of time. Not every book in the VGO series is as good as this first one, but they are all good enough to keep me looking forward to the next one!

What is it like for a small flap-eared goblin herbalist to play the role of the Dark Sovereign, the main antagonist for Boundless Realm's hundreds of millions of players? What is it like to find one's self the standard bearer for an army of man-eating giants, cyclops, skeletons, ghosts, and other hellspawn, who don't give a damn about their modest little ruler? Our hero didn't desire such an unenviable fate, but there is no way back now. But the longer he plays, the better he understands that he is just a pawn in someone else's game.

This book is translated and there are some questionable gender dynamics throughout the series - but the LitRPG aspect is very well done and propels the plot along at lightening pace. Would have finished in a day (at 1.5x) if I could have gotten away with it.

You'd refuse point blank, wouldn't you? But what if the job in question was playing a state-of-the-art fantasy MMORPG game? And what if this was the only thing you're really good at? Especially considering that your in-game partner is someone really special to you - and this person already lives a virtual life?

Story
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Story
It is a tale of ghosts, of madness, of revenge - of old alliances giving way to new intrigues. Denmark is changing, shaking off its medieval past. War with Norway is on the horizon. And Hamlet - son of the old king, nephew of the new - becomes increasingly entangled in a web of deception - and murder. Beautifully performed by actor Richard Armitage ("Thorin Oakenshield" in the Hobbit films), Hamlet, Prince of Denmark takes Shakespeare’s original into unexpected realms, reinventing a story we thought we knew.

Given the liberties taken, informed as they may be, there's no driving force to this adaptation, which, according to its authors, seeks to replace the philosophizing with action.
