Not a fan of the narration, enjoyed the stories and insight
Reviewed: 04-11-24
The narrator kept mispronouncing perseverance and it seemed like narration speed had been slowed down. I kept narration on 1.2x normal speed and it was ok. I enjoyed the insight lessons and stories shared throughout the book.

Story
At 24 years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon - a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws - and was tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a mountain valley along Afghanistan's eastern frontier. Parnell and his men assumed they would be facing a ragtag bunch of civilians, but in May 2006 what started out as a routine patrol through the lower mountains of the Hindu Kush became a brutal ambush.

Not a book to passively listen to. I don’t know how many times I stopped and jotted down a sentence or two. Lots of thought provoking nuggets! It was very entertaining as well! I laughed out loud several times.

Story
A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted. For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure". She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. But there was a price. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth.

Story
Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

Imogen Church did an amazing job as usual. I liked the setting and the basic bones of the book but it didn’t really get exciting until the end and then it fizzled out really quick. This one wasn’t for me.
