Story
After fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, Tommie, Beverly is attempting to create a new life for them in a small town off the beaten track. Despite their newfound freedom, Beverly is constantly on guard: she creates a fake backstory, wears a disguise around town, and buries herself in DIY projects to stave off anxiety. But her stress only rises when Tommie insists he’d been hearing someone walking on the roof and calling his name late at night.

Story is good. Post production is a miss.

I enjoyed the story, but I find the addition of guitar music while the narrator is reading to be extremely distracting. Towards the end of the book, the singing was also annoying. Aside from that, the book was good. Not my favorite book he's written, but worth listening to.

Story
Life for Hyam is bittersweet. Admired by the citizens of Falmouth for his heroic rescue mission, he cherishes these peaceful days with Joelle by his side. Yet grief over the loss of his magical skills during the great Battle of Emporis threatens to engulf him. Sometimes he even wishes he had never known magic at all. When Hyam comes into possession of an ancient Milantian scroll, he is thrilled to feel the surge of power that courses through him whenever he touches it. But what he discerns in the text could mean war.

Loving it, the narrator gives it a "the hobbit" vibe. The author has good pacing.

Story Great- Awful Narrator

I loved this book, however, I almost quit listening in the first chapter because of the narrator's voice. I'm not sure how she got the job. The only way I managed to listen to the book in it's entirety is by speeding it up to 1.50x. It helped with the droning tones of the narrator.
Aside from that, it was a good book. I've read almost everything by this author, and haven't been disappointed yet. I would have liked to know if Rona ever read the manuscript, but otherwise the story wrapped up nicely.

This is listed as book 1, however, it's Book 2. The order in which these Lucy Harwin novels should be read are as follows:
Last Light
Dark House
Dying Breath
I hope that saves others the frustration of feeling like they are missing information when reading this book. You ARE missing information because this is actually book #2.

Story
Detective Lucy Harwin is called out to attend the discovery of a woman’s body in an abandoned, crumbling church and is quickly plunged into a case that will test her leadership skills to the limit. With no leads except the crudely-fashioned crucifix the victim was displayed on, Lucy is at a complete loss. That is, until another body turns up: an elderly woman who devoted her life to the church. Faced with a killer stalking the streets of her small coastal town, while also throwing herself into work to forget the love of her life, Lucy’s first case is turning into a nightmare.

I will save you all some frustration if you read Dark House first and find it confusing: This is the first book! It will make so much more sense if you read this one first. Otherwise, great novel and great narrator!

Story
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

This book started pretty slow for me. Thankfully, I was reading this at the same time as a friend, and I decided to just keep listening. I'm glad I stuck with it. Grumpy old Ove becomes quite endearing. ♥️
