Story
The dentist was found with a blackened hole below his right temple. A pistol lay on the floor near his out flung right hand. Later, one of his patients was found dead from a lethal dose of local anaesthetic. A clear case of murder and suicide. But why would a dentist commit a crime in the middle of a busy day of appointments? A shoe buckle holds the key to the mystery. Now - in the words of the rhyme - can Poirot pick up the sticks and lay them straight?

Story
The end of Communism and breakup of the Soviet Union was a time of euphoria around the world, but Russia today is violently anti-American and dangerously nationalistic. So how did we go from the promise of those days to the autocratic police state of Putin's new Russia? The Invention of Russia reaches back to the darkest days of the Cold War to tell the story of the fight for the soul of a nation.

The author does a great job with the subject. There's a lot of ground to be covered and it can be difficult with unfamiliar names but it's great if you enjoy history. The narrator is excellent.

Story
Iowa housewife Tracey Pittman Roberts seemed to have it all: natural beauty, three loving children, and a fairy-tale second marriage to a wealthy, handsome businessman. But beneath the happy façade was a woman who used lies, manipulation, sex, ugly allegations, blackmail - and even murder - to serve her own selfish ends. In 2001, police rushed to Tracey's home after a shooting left her vulnerable young neighbor dead. Tracey claimed it was an act of self-defense. Nine gunshot wounds - and a decades-long trail of extortion and fraud - said otherwise.

Not bad...
Reviewed: 08-14-24
The story was okay but the swearing by the author (not quotes of individuals) was unnecessary. Another pet peeve, he kept referring to himself as "me" as opposed to "this author". Additionally, the overwhelming amount of quotes was very annoying. It felt like every paragraph was 50% quotes.
The narrator did a great job with the material and I would definitely listen to more of his work.
Overall, not bad but definitely not good.

I don’t think I can handle anymore from Gregg Olsen. Go with Ann Rule, Jack Olsen, or Steve Jackson but give Gregg Olsen a pass. I’ve tried three of his so far and none of them were worth the credit.

I really don’t like the parts where Gregg Olsen tells about Charlie crying out in the garage, his impression of the tarp being an ocean around him, etc. If Charlie remembered that and contributed those facts in an interview, then say so at the end of the book. Don’t put those things in like they’re fact unless it’s known to be true.

Story
The dapper, mustache-twirling little Belgian with the egg-shaped head and curious mannerisms has solved some of the most puzzling crimes of the century - and, in his own humble opinion, is "probably the greatest detective in the world". In this complete collection of more than 50 stories, ranging from short tales to novellas, Poirot faces violent murders, poisonings, kidnappings, and thefts - all solved with his characteristic panache. Only Agatha Christie could have devised cases worthy of Hercule Poirot's skill and "little gray cells".

Raw, straightforward, and powerful, Ed Kugler's account of his two years as a Marine scout-sniper in Vietnam vividly captures his experiences there - the good, the bad, and the ugly. After enlisting in the Marines at 17, then being wounded in Santo Domingo during the Dominican crisis, Kugler arrived in Vietnam in early 1966. As a new sniper with the 4th Marines, Kugler picked up bush skills while attached to 3d Force Recon Company, and then joined the grunts.

But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.
