Story
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

The stories about the sacrifice and ongoing trauma that war brings through generations are important to tell. I was touched by how the author talked about the history of traumatic brain injury in warfare and how it effected his upbringing, the psychology of combat, and other things, but a lot of this book fixates on the practice of exhuming the remains of the fallen and brining them back to the United States. As if honoring their memories and telling their stories is less important than than having a box of bones to stand over.

Story
Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.

I didn't finish because it wasn't really anything new to me, but I'd imagine it would be good for someone that doesn't already have a science education.

Story
The Problems of Philosophy discusses Bertrand Russell's views on philosophy and the problems that arise in the field. Russell's views focus on knowledge rather than the metaphysical realm of philosophy. The Problems with Philosophy revolves around the central question that Russell asks in his opening line of Chapter 1 - Is there any knowledge in the world which is so certain that no reasonable man could doubt it?

A worthy sequal

I can see why it wouldn't get quite the same fanfare as the original, but the story of Ready Player Two is even more awe inspring than the first. It is a must-read, thought-provoking transhumanist tale that Cline must have had rolling around in his head for a long time before reaching his final draft. One of the finest quality seqeuels to a pop culture icon ever crafted, and a very natural progression of the characters and the Oasis they live in that truely expands upon the depth and personality of the characters I came to love in the first book.
