Story
Join Lola Barnes, a.k.a. a modern Lydia Bennet, at the beginning of a summer gone truly wrong: where a boat party-turned-fiery-fiasco ends with the ship, Lola’s summer plans, and her reputation truly sunk. (The boat was barely on fire, for the record—and all the partygoers were just fine.) Luckily, this disaster of a summer has another thing in store for her: a path of self-discovery she never saw coming.

Personal Growth with a Sense of Humor
Reviewed: 03-22-23
The voice for the character felt very fitting. Thought this was a great performance.
Lola is a self absorbed teenager who wants to be a good person and generally “do better” but fails in moments when social pressures and easier paths are present.
Lola has a great sense of humor and is a very realistic teenager finding her way. I loved her personal growth, family dynamics, and texture as a character.

Story
Sophie O'Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she's feeling bored and restless.

Boring and unlikable characters and plot
Reviewed: 12-30-22
I hated this book. I really didn’t want to finish it but i read it for a book club. I like unlikable characters, but this main character is so uninteresting and awful with very little texture you don’t even love to hate her, or root for her to change. I mostly was rooting for her to get in a car crash and die. She’s an alcoholic - which isn’t addressed. Self absorbed sahm blogger with 0 self control. She’s also dumb. The plot tries to be a thriller but I didn’t care enough about anybody to even care what happened. The murder comes in pretty late and it all just feels pretty poorly written.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Story
For Marnie Barnes, realizing she’s a Mary Bennet is devastating. But she’s determined to reinvent herself, so she enlists the help of her bubbly roommate and opens up to the world. And between new friends, a very cute boy, and a rescue pup named Sir Pat, Marnie finds herself on a path to becoming a new person entirely. But she’s no Lizzy, or even Mary—instead, she’s someone even better: just plain Marnie.

Loved

I loved the character evolution in this book. So many books feel predictable and redundant but Being Mary Bennet had the charm of the young adult genre with more interesting characters and a focus on personal development and friends and family relationships rather than just romantic ones (but it has that too!). Would definitely recommend.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow Series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go.

I love Rainbow Rowell and her narrator Rebecca Lowman. I love everything they’ve done. But this is my favorite. It’s a perfect book, perfectly narrated.

Story
When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse.

Not for me
Reviewed: 02-25-20
This book came highly recommended by friends that I usually share the same taste in books but this was not for me. The narrator was deeply unsexy to me and the book felt too long, to sweet, and too predictable. I know it’s romance and those are all to be expected, but for me it fell flat.

“We were all heading for each other on a collision course, no matter what. Maybe some people are just meant to be in the same story". At first, Jude and her twin brother are NoahandJude; inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them. Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways...but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor.

Will definitely listen again. Super cute story. Loved the way it followed one person at one point and the other mc 2 years later. Seeing the way the stories intertwined was a really fabulous storytelling technique. Can't recommend enough!
