What Fun!

After listening to The Scarlet Letter and Billy Budd and I'm sick of hearing about COVID19, I wanted something upbeat this was exactly what I needed to hear. The story is a fast-paced and humorous mystery. What a great combo! I thoroughly enjoyed the reader as well and I'm rather particular about readers. My time and money was well spent.

Leo Tolstoy's classic story of doomed love is one of the most admired novels in world literature. Generations of readers have been enthralled by his magnificent heroine, the unhappily married Anna Karenina, and her tragic affair with dashing Count Vronsky.

The right reader?

I absolutely love the story and the language Tolstoy uses in this book . However, I spend a large portion of my listening time to telling myself to ignore how it's read and just listen to the words. I doubt that Tolstoy meant it to be a languid read with the occasional lapse into a New York accent. I find myself rolling my eyes at the way it's read.
I usually read reviews before purchasing a new book but forgot to this time. Lesson learned.

Always Fascinating

I have read this book to my middle school students for 3 years. Now it was my turn to listen. The tale is so extraordinary that even the 4th time through it continues to fascinate me. Be sure to see the pictures in the printed copy. They add a lot to the story. Its too bad you don't get them with the audio version somehow.

Story
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

Some books are just as good to read as to listen to but not this one. Fannie Flag shows off her acting skills creating great voices for her characters. A fun summer listen, I really enjoyed this one!
