Extremely talented narrator. Reminds me of a professional dungeon master with her wide variety of accents and acting, and dramatic emphasis makes it engaging to listen to even the most mundane sections, not that there are many of those either. Story is compelling, with intriguing mystery, deep world building, and hilarious antics. Loved it from start to finish.

Arifureta is probably my favorite series of all time. I’m just happy to have it in audiobook format. Overall, the performance was pretty good and I have only compliments to give, but if I’m being honest, after hearing Matt Shipman narrate the first volume, I’m left wondering how much better it could have been if he’d narrated this one too. But Anyway, the audiobook lives up to my high expectations. For those who haven’t read the books already, the anime leaves out enough detail that the novel is like reading a whole new story, and I couldn’t recommend reading it enough. The story only gets better from here.

Story
Seventeen-year-old Hajime Nagumo is your average, everyday otaku. However, his simple life of pulling all-nighters and sleeping in school is suddenly turned upside down when he, along with the rest of his class, is summoned to a fantasy world! They're treated like heroes and tasked with the duty of saving the human race from utter extinction. But what should have been any otaku's wet dream quickly turns into Hajime's nightmare. While the rest of his class are blessed with godlike powers, Hajime's job, Synergist, only has a single transmutation skill.

Matt Shipman is an amazing narrator!
Reviewed: 12-28-24
I’ve read the whole Arifureta series, volumes 1-13, and I love the story for its compelling characters with obvious growth throughout the story, deep world-building, hilarious antics, and its ability to be lighthearted on the surface without losing the serious tone of the story. I recently purchased the audiobook as a way of rereading the story during my increasingly busy life, and I have no regrets. Both narrators are great, but Matt Shipman in particular is Amazing! He performs the story with perfect emphasis and manages to capture the intent behind every line he reads, and he’s capable of seamlessly performing the various sound effects and screaming in a way that doesn’t sound like someone reading an onamatopoeia off a page. His narration is perfectly suited for this story, and I hope he comes back often to narrate the rest of the volumes! I’m waiting very impatiently for the rest of the series to come out as audiobooks, but I’d rather not sacrifice quality for speed, so I hope they take as long as they need to get it right.
