Jack Jr.’s growth into a campus team leader arrives. The rescue falls together too neatly. And it seems that Jack St. has been President for way too many terms for Jr. to grow up this much. The narration is awesome!

Story
In the summer of 1928, sixteen-year-old Minka was looking forward to a sewing class picnic. This would be a rare chance to put aside farm chores, don a pretty dress, and enjoy an outing with other girls. It would be a day to remember. And it was - but not in the way Minka had dreamed. Cornered by a stranger in the woods, the young girl was assaulted. Minka still believed that the stork brought babies; she would not discover for months that she was pregnant.

Told with care for detail and great respect for Minkallo and her life’s story. At times the story got bogged down in the details. Her resilience and wisdom through hard times was amazing. And the way the Lord redeemed those lost years in the end is inspiring. Narration was easy to listen to, compelling.

Story
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Reviewed: 12-22-23
Meachom presents a thorough and moving account of Lincoln’s growth as a man, politician and ethical leader. We see his hesitancy, his struggles, his often difficult marriage, his pain in war time. We also come to admire Lincoln’s methodical, principled leadership. Meachom’s narration made this even more compelling.

Funny at times, very dark and depressing
Reviewed: 11-28-23
I was curious because I liked Chandler Bing. I am glad that Matthew survived and found a measure of healing in the end. But a lot of this was very repetitive, self-centered, and depressing. One great side benefit is that it may scare away some who are tempted by highly addictive substances. That would be a wonderful outcome. All the same, I am glad Matthew wrote this and found some peace before his unfortunate death.

Story
By the 1890s, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city and a shining example of a mixed-race community. It was a bustling port city with a burgeoning African American middle class and a Fusionist government of Republicans and Populists that included black aldermen, police officers, and magistrates. There were successful black-owned businesses and an African American newspaper, The Record. But across the state - and the South - white supremacist Democrats were working to reverse the advances made by former slaves and their progeny.

The painful story of Alex Manly and the white coup of Wilmington, NC, reveals the generations of concealment and cover-ups that persisted for more than 100 years. This audio version is well written, thoroughly researched, and well narrated. Hopefully, lessons from 1898 will lead to making sure this never happens again.

Story
Quickly becoming a cornerstone of Holocaust historiography, this is a devastatingly stark memoir from one of the lone survivors of Treblinka. Why do some live while so many others perish? Tiny children, old men, beautiful girls - in the gas chambers of Treblinka, all are equal. The Nazis kept the fires of Treblinka burning night and day, a central cog in the wheel of the Final Solution.
