Story
Have you ever wondered why America, unlike virtually any other industrial nation, continues to show so much religious vitality? Or why are the varieties of religion found in the United States are so numerous and diverse? In this vigorous series of 24 lectures, Professor Allitt argues that the best way to look for explanations of this truly remarkable vitality and diversity is to study the nation's religious history. That's a task, though, that involves more than simply examining religion from the directions you might expect....

I was surprised how this course held my attention from beginning to end. The title sounded like it might be boring to me. The professor is extremely well informed and I truly enjoyed his presentation. He made it seem like a story unfolding, which it is, though my high school and college history teachers failed me in that way. I was grateful that this professor explained his English accent in the beginning-that only added to the meaning of the course for me.
I had never thought about how much religion impacted American history-or how much American history impacted religion. This course has added to my understanding of religion’s impact on current events in the United States (where I have lived all of my life) although that wasn’t actually included in the lectures.
I plan to listen to more books by this professor.
The included PDF is a wonderfully comprehensive resource. I especially appreciated the timeline, bibliography and recommended reading in the appendix.

This is a recording of one of Dr. Fuhrman‘s super immunity guided detox zoom groups. He met with the group on Zoom once a week for six weeks. In each of the six weekly sessions, he first presents some information and then spends most of the time answering questions of group participants.
I have read three of Dr. Fuhrman’s books and eaten Nutratarian for almost ten years, and still I learned a lot. Dr. Fuhrman’s enthusiasm is contagious and I find myself effortlessly improving my diet and exercise just by listening to this recording a few minutes a day.
It does not include a PDF of recipes. Anyone looking for recipes would probably like Dr. Fuhrman’s most recent book, “Eat For Life.” That audio book includes a PDF with sample menus for three different eating plans including his autoimmune disease and cancer plan (which is the super immunity plan of this guided detox). “Eat for Life” audio and print book also includes sample menus and recipes for general good health & weight and for diabetes reversal.
I am very grateful to Dr. Fuhrman. He gives the real truth of the research, not a more profitable (for him) version. He has me thriving despite being elderly.

Story
In a field known for startling ideas, the Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics may take the prize. It holds that parallel to our own world are a large number of other universes, almost identical to ours but with small variations. Copies of each of us inhabit a myriad of these worlds. But they are not us exactly; they share our past history, but they are different people who have unique futures. Although these realms are invisible and can’t communicate with each other, prominent physicists are convinced they must exist.

I was a C student in high school physics about 60 years ago. I was a C student in high school and college chemistry at about that same time. Fortunately, I realized I lacked aptitude in these sciences and changed to a non-science major where I excelled. But I never lost interest.
I was able to follow and understand the basics of this class by often repeating brief parts of it. It took constant effort, but to me it was worth the effort. If I had had no science background I don’t think I would have gotten anything from this course. For those with no science background this is not the class to start with.
I wish I had had instructors of this ability back in high school and college. This professor has immense knowledge, understanding and teaching abilities.

What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

This is much more than history. It is about the contributions of various groups of people and events to the way we look at and live our lives today. It’s enjoyable and thought provoking, more than I expected. The topic may sound dull to some, but this gifted, knowledgeable professor makes the course into a real page turner.
The course tied together so many things for me, including political systems, religious influences, literature, geography, language and much more. Often I don’t completely finish Great Courses (although I plan to). This course I listened through to the very end, much like I’d listen to a novel. It just happens to be a true story. It will continue to live with me and help me make sense of new things I learn. I expect I’ll listen to it again in six months or a year.

Essential reading for every adult

Having had a college statistics course long ago, I was familiar with some of the content. I was reminded of the required reading in the course of the book “How to Lie with Statistics.” And, yes, it is surprisingly easy to lie with statics. Politicians and everyone in marketing knows well how to do that.
This book goes beyond that though in numerous ways, including applying it to the internet age and social media.
Though this wasn’t a fun book for me, it was highly informative and left me better able to protect myself and my family from misinformation.
It’s okay to skip ahead a few chapters, though it’s all worth the time.
If you’re confused about which foods are healthy, this book will help you know what to turn to for best evidence, and I don’t mean which news sources or “experts.”

A privilege to hear
Reviewed: 05-11-24
I’ve listened to several of Dr. Greenberg’s classes and all have been outstanding. I wish I had heard this one first, though I’m not going to dwell on that. They’re great whatever order you take them.
He says early on that this is not a music appreciation course. I think it is, but it’s much, much more.
It’s difficult to explain how good Dr. Greenberg’s classes are. I developed a much deeper understanding history and how it impacted music and our lives even today. I learned some music theory and truly how to listen to music and what kinds of music I most like. I learned about the composers lives and how the world they lived in affected their music. (They have to please their audiences to get paid and pay their bills.)
Dr. Greenberg has a wonderful sense of humor and a way of saying outrageous things to make concepts understandable. I often found myself laughing, and that’s unfortunately rare for me.
This class is fun to listen to. I feel very lucky to be able to listen to it in the comfort of my own home, or, indeed, anywhere. I would have to pay lots of money to go to a college with professors anywhere near as good as Dr. Greenberg. I honestly think he’s the best of the best.

Ignores hard end point data
Reviewed: 04-05-24
I learned some useful new tips for building muscle mass from this book and it was worth the time to listen to it.
BUT the author ignores hard-end point data (age of death) with his diet and supplement recommendations. Yes, building muscle mass and strength is important and very healthful. But some foods and supplements that are beneficial for muscle gain increase risk of various diseases. I think he owes it to readers to look at hard-end point research and explain it.
Rather than getting into long explanations about various foods, consider steroid drugs (which he definitely doesn’t recommend). Such drugs increase muscle mass and strength but at a high cost to life expectancy. Unfortunately some foods and supplements which he does recommend also reduce life expectancy.

A brilliant undertaking
Reviewed: 12-12-23
I took my health from D+ to A+ after reading Dr. Gregor’s “How Not to Die” in Dec. 2015, despite being older than I care to say. (And my doctor agrees). This latest book is going to help me keep my A+ health as I continue to age. I’ve already made a few changes.
Dr. Gregor’s narration is wonderful. No one else could have done it.
I love that the table of contents is spelled out, so I can quickly find exactly what I want to hear.
I also bought the print edition and am glad I did. The supplement I cut out (because I looked it up in the detailed index and learned of the risk) has already paid for the book.
Dr. Gregor’s combing of all the research is extremely thorough. I believe he’s giving me the bottom line on so many things I’ve wondered about. And this audiobook does give the bottom line without looking at the available video. So far I’ve just found the need to look at one of the available videos. And how fantastic that I could do that! I’ve read another book that made that resource available. Let’s not make perfect the enemy of the good concerning the bit of time to find the exact material.
Honestly, I’d probably be dead by now if it wasn’t for Dr. Gregor. But instead I’m hiking, loving what I eat more than I did pre-Gregor, and actually feeling wonderful and enjoying life. And this book exceeded my expectations. I wish I could personally thank this brilliant, beautiful soul.
I think this is an excellent choice for using an Audible credit because of the time it takes to read the book and much of it I expect to listen to again.

Even from the perspective of time, it is nearly impossible to grasp the full contribution made to music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in his brief and glorious life. He composed his first symphony at the age of 8 and reached full artistic maturity by the time he was only 20. And when he died at the age of 35, he left a legacy of more than 600 works of brilliance - symphonies, chamber music, operas, and more - most composed during an incredibly productive 20-year period.

I’ve heard several of Dr. Greenberg’s courses and they have all been excellent. In this course, I especially enjoyed how Dr. Greenberg explained the interaction of biographical information and historical context on Mozart’s music. I loved hearing the short pieces of music and will enjoy all of Mozart’s music, and I think all music, much more because of this course.
Dr. Greenberg’s exceptional knowledge, teaching talent and humor make this class sparkle. I looked forward to hearing each class and was sorry to see it end.
