The distant world of Russalka has no land, only the raging sea; no clear skies, only storm clouds. Beneath the waves, the people live in pressurised environments and take what they need from the ocean. It is a hard life, but it is theirs and they fought a war against Earth to protect it. But wars leave wounds that never quite heal. Katya Kuriakova doesn't care much about ancient history like that, though. She is making her first submarine voyage as crew; the first journey of what she expects to be a nice, simple career. There is nothing nice and simple about the deep black waters of Russalka, however....

Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, has come into possession of a vital clue that may lead him to his ultimate goal: a cure for death. The path is vague, however, and certainly treacherous as it takes him into strange territories that, quite literally, no one has ever seen before. The task is too dangerous to venture upon alone, so he must seek assistance - comrades for the coming travails.
