Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living a nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. A story of hope
Reviewed: 02-16-19
Outstanding end of the world story. Unlike every other apocalypse book, this one doesn't have bad guys. It isn't full of violence. It is full of smart people who are trying to rebuild a community. I really hope we get a 2nd book.

Story
Return to the zombie apocalypse wasteland that is the Rot & Ruin in this short story collection from Jonathan Maberry. Benny Imura's zombie-infested adventures are well-chronicled in the gripping novels Rot & Ruin, Dust & Decay, Flesh & Bone, and Fire & Ash. But what else was happening while he was on his quest? Who were the others navigating the ravaged landscape full of zombies? Bits & Pieces fills in the gaps about what we know about First Night, surviving the plague, and traveling the land of Rot & Ruin.

If Peter from Family Guy wrote a story about Insurance, this would be that story. A lot of fun with crazy situations. Amazing performance too.

Story
On opening day of the new baseball season a small model-kit airplane flies down from the stands and buzzes the mound, where a decorated veteran pilot is about to throw out the first ball. The toy plane is the exact replica of the one flown by the war hero. Everyone laughs, thinking it's a prank or a publicity stunt. Until it explodes, killing dozens. Seconds later a swarm of killer drones descend upon the picnicked crowd, each one carrying a powerful bomb. All across the country artificial intelligence drive systems in cars, commuter trains and even fighter planes go out of control.

At the edge of my seat for the entire book. I didn't think Jonathan could do so many horrible things to so many characters all in a single book. Emotional roller coaster. I can only imagine him thinking "what can I do next and to who?".
Can't wait for the next book to see how the team (and world) is recovering.

Could have been 3 hours long instead
Reviewed: 01-09-15
Interesting enough story but it dragged on hour after hour with boring amounts of detail. I feel like I could fly a fighter jet after spending so much time listing to each detail.
The book is almost like a bad version of Independence day. Way too much time spent covering travel details from point A to point. B. Not enough time on the alien characters or backstory. The female lead character didn't even need to be in 90% of her story.
Listen on 1.25 times speed.

Story
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, a simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall - and the ability to forget it ever happened.

Not very logical
Reviewed: 12-02-14
It was an interesting story, but the motivation for creating silos and everything else behind what happens to the people and silos has no basis in logic. I just don't believe such a small number of key players could have made all of this happen.
The 500 lifespan of a silo and everything inside is a total joke.
That being said, I am still going to read the next book in the serious to see what happens.

Agent Franks of the U.S. Monster Control Bureau is a man of many parts - parts from other people, that is. Franks is nearly seven feet tall and all muscle. He's nearly indestructible. Plus he’s animated by a powerful alchemical substance and inhabited by a super-intelligent spirit more ancient than humanity itself. Good thing he’s on our side. More or less.

I was really hoping to read a MHI story, but this was really a Franks story. In fact MHI has only a very small part in the entire book, which was a disappointment. Overall this really was a "back story" book.
The book did grow on me and I was pretty happy with it overall.
