Story
This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

Story
Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

This isn't just a story about a love affair between two men. It's a powerful and heartfelt cautionary story about what can happen to you and those in your life if you can't allow yourself to love. it is a plea for the listener to stop running and turn towards the people in their life who love them. Just love. That's all you need to do. Cherish the love that comes your way.

Story
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Eye opening glimpse into the black experience
Reviewed: 04-18-21
This book weaves a beautiful and terrifying tapestry of what it's like to be a black man in Western society. It is written succinctly and poetically and delivers difficult but real messages about race, racism and the often insidiously quiet, almost hidden issues with the common striving for living 'the dream' that most of us take up at some point in our lives.

Brilliant production. Lots of replay value.

The narration and music are superb. I personally preferred the version with music (part 1). The music was well performed and added to my experience by acting as short interludes between sections, giving me time to process the previous lesson. I'll be coming back to this recording many times.
Also, Dalinar as the prophet? How perfect is that?

This was a wonderful mix of amazing talent, sound design and direction. I was very impressed with the attention to detail in the sound design and it was executed in a way that stimulated the imagination and engaged me.
My only critique would be that the storyline felt somdwhat flat. Still, the outstanding performances of the entire cast more than made up for it.

The narrator was excellent. I felt like it was the author himself relaying the ideas

Lots to learn

This was a great introduction to feminism for me (29 y/o M). There were many eye opening revelations, from historical accounts of how racism was present in the movement, to the many examples of how the patriarchy negatively affects men.
I sometimes felt like arguments and trains of thought were not laid out in an easy way to follow, though a second listen will likely make it easier.
The narrator was impeccable. She delivered with such feeling that I kept believing that she was the author herself.

It starts simple, breaking down discipline. Then it moves deeper, defining 'love' and how it differs from 'falling in love'. Last it maps out the relationship between consciousness, the unconscious and god.
It is an inspiring/informative read if you want to challenge yourself and are open to taking the next step in your spiritual growth

This was a powerful piece that hit hard. Her delivery was filled with emotion and attitude.
Specifically, I'd like to point out that while a lot of this was geared towards women, I felt I learned a lot as a man and am grateful for the eloquently expressed perspective. It was a powerful catalyst for self-reflection, particularly in the ways I have treated the women in my life. I have no doubt that this will be on my mind moving forward.
