Fun characters and excellent narrator

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 02-04-11

I enjoy the Holmes on the Range series. If you have never read the series start with the first book. Big Red and Old Red are wonderful characters and the narrator William Dufris does a fantastic job of bringing them to life. I laugh out loud when I listen to this series. If you prefer serious mysteries with wholly realistic characters then these books may not be for you but if you enjoy fun and outlandish characters you will like this series set in the old west.

Great Series, Sarah Woolson is wonderful

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 04-01-10

I listened to the first 3 books and have just finished reading the fourth (which I hope will be available on Audible soon). If you like historical fiction/ mysteries you will enjoy these books.
Unlike a previous reviewer I find the main character Sarah W. interesting and full of pluck. These stories are set in the 1880's 40 years before women won the right to vote and therefore, I find Shirley Tallman's male characters and their sexism and racism to be perfectly believable and Sarah's frustration with her society and the men who control it to be reasonable. The author has several important male characters who are neither sexist nor racist so she does not generalize about all men. It is clear that the author has done her research on the role of women in the 1880's and in the legal profession. It is hard to believe but some law schools such as Harvard did not admit women until the 1950's.
The mysteries are good but I enjoy the books because of the characters. I think if you enjoy Elizabeth Peters you would also enjoy this series. I hope there will be many more books in this series and that the love story will become even more central and lead to further growth for the character of Sarah.
Anna Fields was a great narrator and will be missed.

Good & Depressing

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 10-31-09

This series is difficult to like because the main character's childhood was tragic and it is the center of this fourth book. The first three books provide background but this story solves one tragic mystery of her childhood. I still have to say that I enjoy this series because the main character is so interesting and different. I look forward to the next story and seeing what will happen to her now that her tragic past is set to rest.

too much talk too little action

This book was a disappointment especially after reading Jim Butcher's series "The Furies of Calderon." I said it all in the title for a fantasy adventure this had very little adventure. At half the length it still could not compare to Furies - Read Butchers series if you want great fantasy, action and adventure

LOVE THIS SERIES

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 08-20-09

I love this series so much I am sorry the next book will be the last. While Natalie Ross is a good narrator I hate the fact that they changed the narrator in the middle of the series, Joyce Bean was excellent she was MAC. I truly enjoyed her energy and her wonderful southern accent. Why didn't they have her and Phil G. together that would have been great. Ms. Ross had no southern accent and mispronounced the name Rowena repeatedly (about 200 times). When inconsistencies like this occur I wonder whether the audiobook producer listened to the previous books. I dislike Narrator changes in the middle of series but regardless I absolutely love these stories. I would just like to see it redone with Joyce Bean.

Weak characters and plot - Fabulous Sex

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 01-11-09

Compared to Amanda Quick and Susan Elizabeth Peters whose characters and plots are fantastic this authors are very weak and made even weaker by the fact that the stories are twice as long. On the other hand Ms. Laurens knows how to write great sex scenes which begin slowly and grow in intensity with each encounter. For this reason alone I plan to try another of her books and hope that the next plot and the dialogue has greater depth and complexity.

A Classic Adventure, Romance & Surprises

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 05-11-08

Written in 1921 and set in the years before the French Revolution this tale may be too political for some but it delves into moral questions about human nature and government that are still relevant today.
While the setting is informative and intriguing the most wonderful part of the this book is a facsinating main character, fantastic adventure, nice romance and some great surprises.
I even wondered if George Lucas had ever read this before he created Star Wars.
I had some difficulty at the beginning but once the action begins it never stops. I can't believe Masterpiece Theatre has not made a serial of this book.
I loved it

Great Romance & Narrator

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 03-10-08

I made the mistake of listening to this trilogy out of order. This is the second story which I listened to first - it is also the best of the three. Listen in order to these although anyone of these stories could stand alone.
The first book, dead silence, is a good story with a good narrator. The second, dead giveaway is an excellent story with a wonderful romance and an amazing amount of suspense. I loved it. This narrator was fabulous and although I understand why they had three different narrators (each representing the sibling whose story was being told) I wish Chris Rimmel had been the narrator for the entire series. His portrayal of the sibling Clay is incredibly sexy and even the female voices were terrific.
The third story has the weakest romance, a terrible narrator and the storyline becomes too sordid (too much distubing detail on pediphiles - not for the faint of heart).
Read them in order - You won't be dissapointed by the first two.
I look forward to seeing what this author creates next!!

Amelia & Barbara are Wonderful

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 02-27-08

I listened to this entire series a year ago and just listened to all 18 books again. The charecters are eccentric and endearing. The setting in Egypt is interesting and the mysteries are fun. If you enjoy mysteries, romance and continuing charecters, some of whom develop as the story unfolds you will enjoy these stories.
Read them in order beginning with this book.
Barbara Rosenblat is an absolutely amazing narrator. She does a magnificant job capturing a variety of voices; male and female from child to senior as well as Egyptian, British and American accents. Hope you enjoy Amelia and her family as much as I did.

Exciting & Wonderful

I loved this book, It was filled with suspense and excitment. Although I was able to puzzle out much of the mystery this did not matter because the characters were so captivating that I still enjoyed the story tremendously. The narrator was absolutely fabulous. If you enjoy mysteries and romance you will be captivated.
