Wordy, but good.
Reviewed: 12-23-24
There were parts of this that were very wordy. It did not unduly detract from the experience and, remembering Tom Clancy, about what you would expect. Clancy went into, sometimes, excruciating detail. This was well done overall and LDP is an excellent performer. All in all a quality effort.

It is The Campus. Secretly created under the administration of President Jack Ryan, its sole purpose is to eliminate terrorists and those who protect them. Officially, it has no connection to the American government - a necessity in a time when those in power consider themselves above such arcane ideals as loyalty, justice, and right or wrong.

Very Clancy-esque
Reviewed: 11-12-24
I very much enjoyed this. It reminded me of Clancy's writing, sometimes a little long winded but it held my attention. I have known many of the characters for years, so it is a lot like catching up with old friends. Great action, and the good guys don't come away unscathed, which is sad, but makes it more real.
Lou Diamond Phillips did a great job with the narration, I always liked him as an actor, but his voice acting is excellent also. All in all a worthy effort for all concerned.

The story is ok, the narration was very good, there was a lot of decent action. However, it is far too preachy for my tastes. I don't need a sermon about christianity or the love of jesus or how to subject myself to superstitious nonsense. It completely ruined the listen for me and will keep me from buying anything else from these authors.
I admire the Mossad and would enjoy more about them, but for a book about Israeli Jews I don't understand all the christian references. It is too bad as the story was promising.

This is a book that was advertised as a dark thriller. Nailed it. Some of the nuances were outstanding and the action was there in spades. Character development was decent. The narration was a problem for me at first, but I grew to like it. I probably won't read any more of these authors. Too dark with little redemption for the characters. I don't need a peaches and cream resolution for what I listen to, but there should be some hope left at the end.

Daniel Silva is one of, if not my favorite, authors ever. His writing is superb, and he has learned that (IMHO), character development is the foundation of a great story. The interactions between Gabriel and Chiarra are fantastic. The supporting players are believable and well fleshed out.
I love the fact that, although he is not a large man, Gabriel is extremely tough and willing to put his life on the line for his people and beliefs.
Then there is Edoardo Ballerini, whose voice control is simply superb. He switches between characters with ease and is one of the very best narrators.
I rarely give 5 stars, especially across the board, but it is deserved in this case. I also rarely re-listen to a book, I could start the Gabriel Allon series all over again and love it.

US intelligence is reporting turmoil in the Russian navy. Their deadliest submarine, the Belgorod, has unexpectedly launched, and taken along with it a long list of questions. Who authorized the departure? What mission is it on? And, most disturbing of all, what weapons do the giant doors on the sub’s bow hide? It's been four decades since a similar incident with the Soviet sub, Red October, ended happily, thanks to a young CIA analyst named Jack Ryan.

I don't really like their books that bring spirituality into the story. Otherwise some of my favorite books.

I rarely give 5 stars, especially in all 3 categories. This book, however, checked all the boxes. One of the best thrillers I have encountered. I have waited a long time for this installment of the Tier One Thrillers, It delivered. The characters are like old friends.
Andrews and Wilson are probably my favorite authors right now. They also just wrote a Jack Ryan novel that was outstanding, very Clancyesque. I cannot wait for more from them.
Ray Porter is, without a doubt, one of my all time favorite narrators. He is phenomenal!!
I wanted to finish the book, but I did not want it to end. Well done!!.
