More than expected
Reviewed: 01-08-25
This book was not the fluff piece I was anticipating. It had greater depth, a more intricate plot, more character development than I was expecting. I was really drawn into the story. I highly recommend this book

Unresolved Ending, but great book!
Reviewed: 01-06-25
I greatly prefer books which finish with a complete resolution, whether part of a series or not. This book ended with a bit of a clifthanger. Normally I would be angry, but this book was so entirely enjoyable that I still recommend it. I wish I could immediately start the next book, but it has yet to be released. Be aware of that frustration. One of the all-time best books otherwise.

UNRESOLVED ENDING
Reviewed: 12-25-24
If you like war books, you will like this book. It is well done and reminiscent of Tom Clancey's books. Just be aware that this book is not intended to be read as a stand-alone book. You need to move on to the rest of the series for the rest of the story.

Story
When it comes to divorce, forewarned is forearmed. This book delivers both in a story you won't be able to pause. Equal parts suspense thriller and how-to manual, Tim’s memoir is a must read for anyone who’s facing a divorce with children, or loves somebody who is. While most intuitively understand that divorce brings out the worst in people, and many have heard that separating can be extremely costly and frustrating, few approach the process aware of its greatest pitfalls, how truly terrible they are, and just how prevalent they’ve become.

NOT AS DESCRIBED
Reviewed: 11-29-24
I did not read reviews ahead of getting this book, but was very intrigued by the author's description of this book at the end of Twisted Lives. It is called a memoir. it is not. It is a divorce story and a story of parental alianation. The author also describes it as having all the twists of a thriller. Having been through a divorce, I understand why someone emerging from a recent divorce feels that way about their experience. My divorce, in which I also felt innocently victimized by a significant other turned villan, was the one time I felt I was living in a soap opera. However, a soap opera and a thriller are different. In no way is this a thriller. It does take the listener through the pain of divorce and the betrayals which come with it. However, the immense, incomprehensible pain of divorce is tragically common. I remember, while being raw in the experience of divorce, feeling figuratively slapped in the face by a vetran divorcee when he informed me that divorce stories are boring. I quickly realized that few things are as unpleasant as listening to the listings of how hard the righteous party tried and how villainous the other party was, regardless of the truth of their story. This is only important to do with close friends for the support they can give.
That said, this book had solid educational value in understanding the devastating effects of parental alienation and gave some guidance in resources to help people negotiate that situation. Putting myself in an editor's position, I would eliminate the play-by-play leading up to and including the divorce to a summary and focus the text on the parental alianation. Then I would advertise it as such.

Fun stand-alone and series, but lacks depth
Reviewed: 11-03-24
I listened to the 3 books currently available before writing this review, I liked that each book could be enjoyed as a stand-alone book. The plot and action kept my interest. That said, the 2nd and 3rd book follow an unrealistic pattern taken from this first book.

Story
There are three ways up to Castle View from the town of Castle Rock: Route 117, Pleasant Road, and the Suicide Stairs. Every day in the summer of 1974, 12-year-old Gwendy Peterson has taken the stairs, which are held by strong (if time-rusted) iron bolts and zigzag up the cliffside. At the top of the stairs, Gwendy catches her breath and listens to the shouts of the kids on the playground. One day a stranger calls to Gwendy: "Hey, girl. Come on over here for a bit. We ought to palaver, you and me."

Button Box ok, 2nd "story" bad
Reviewed: 10-24-24
The story about the Button Box was interesting, had a plot and a resolution. The second story had none of these... I would have called it a disturbing description of a scene rather than a story. Makes me wonder if Stephen King was feeling lazy or his talent is waning.
