Story
The boxes arrive mysteriously, one by one, at Channing Manheim’s fortified compound. The threat implicit in their bizarre, disturbing contents seems to escalate with each new delivery. Manheim’s security chief, ex-cop Ethan Truman, is used to looking beneath the surface of things. But until he entered the orbit of a Hollywood icon, he had no idea just how slippery reality could be. Now this good man is all that stands in the way of an insidious killer—and forces that eclipse the most fevered fantasies of a city where dreams and nightmares are the stuff of daily life.

This is quite a long book and some parts were a bit too descriptive when it came to the mental insanity of one character! Overall though, Koontz remains one of my favorite authors simply for his writing skills, humor and introspection that shows he’s much deeper than a lot of authors!

At first I thought the story wouldn’t hold my attention, but then… nothing else could. I basically stopped my life to listen to this beautiful story. I’ve already recommended it to my friends and family. I hope you take a chance and listen to this wonderful story by a narrator who has obviously been around children and lived a life filled with emotion. Thank you to the author for putting in the time and effort to write this poignant book! 💘

On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

I just liked it all! Character building was so believable. I can believe perhaps the author is either a mother herself or close to someone who is. The little boy in this book was so adorable and wise as children sometimes are… I was hoping for a good ending but you’ll have to hear it yourself…!

This story brought tears to my eyes. The format was interesting in that real interviews were included from the original soldiers. I very much enjoyed it and believe by hearing the stories collected, history was brought alive - as it should be.

It's a fear more paralyzing than falling. More terrifying than absolute darkness. More horrifying than anything you can imagine. It's the one fear you cannot escape, no matter where you run...no matter where you hide. It's the fear of yourself. It's real. It can happen to you. And facing it can be deadly.

Not quite as appealing to me as some others. Felt like the end was rushed a bit - and the doctor’s motives were a bit unclear (other than he was nuts)! I still very much appreciate Mr Koontz’ use of the language in general and appreciate his character-building skills…. Good narrator too!
