Story
Vincent Solaris is a teenager drifting through life who manages to graduate Ethics School by the skin of his teeth. His unplanned future changes dramatically when he is arrested and charged with crimes against the Central Committee after a night of drinking. While he escapes the gallows, Vincent is sentenced to three years of service in the Earth Defense Forces. Vincent is sent off to train, thinking that he'll simply spend the next few years lazing away at the edges of human-controlled space. This idea is shattered when a mysterious alien army attacks.

Good story but the galaxy is a small place

Good story driven by the characters, you have to forgive the tendency of the main characters only meeting plot relevant people wherever they end up. The author also doesn't attempt to explain the scifi for the most part which is not really necessairy. A good light read.

Story
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Overly long and too sympathetic
Reviewed: 11-22-22
Clearly the author finds some value in taking great pains to separate conventional Mormonism from more extreme sects. However his telling of the origin of the faith and the story of its founder are apologetic to a fault. Especially chapter on Navoo with the predatory nature of Smith at full display feel very dated and lacking some obvious facts like Smith is a liar and a child molester. There are better sources on the history of Mormonism out there and the true crime aspect gets kinda lost in the tedium of the history so that the book gets convoluted and disjointed.

Pretty good story with good humor, only downside that the plot relies too heavily on characters that work together not communicating with each others.
Very well read!
