Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Story
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Random twists and too many Kit-Kats
Reviewed: 02-16-24
This book was really hard to get through. I can’t believe anyone would honestly give this 5 stars - I swear they are either bots or paid for - either way don’t believe them! The “didn’t see it coming” twists were so random that they weren’t interesting. The plot is so loosely put together it’s frustrating and hard to believe at times. Why is this set in the 80s?? So much potential there but it’s not tied into the plot at all, probably just to avoid those pesky technology plot holes. Bad writing, don’t waste your time with this one.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Just okay

I did not connect with the story or the characters much and I’m a gamer! I felt like I was waiting for something to happen, and then when something did happen it didn’t hit like it was intended to. The pace was weird. This is a story that might be more appreciated by actually reading the book and not listening to. Also the female narrator’s voice was a little robotic - maybe that was intentional? I finished it feeling mixed, but mostly relieved it was done.

Slow and not much happens
Reviewed: 09-25-23
The book is slow and honestly not that much happens. I feel like I didn’t really get to know the characters that well. The setting was the best part. I picked this because someone on BookTok said it had great Fall vibes, like Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls, but I’d give it 6/10 for that. I finished it if that says something, but I would never read it again.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Quirky concept - nothing really happens
Reviewed: 03-17-23
First, the description is a bit misleading. The beginning is good as the characters are being introduced but then nothing really happens. There’s not really much depth to the plot. Everything that happens is fairly obvious. It’s not bad it’s just kind of boring.

Oliver Park, a recovering addict from Indiana, finally has everything he ever wanted: sobriety and a loving, wealthy partner in Nathan, a prominent DC trauma surgeon. Despite their difference in age and disparate backgrounds, they've made a perfect life together. With everything to lose, Oliver shouldn't be visiting Haus, a gay bathhouse. But through the entrance he goes, and it's a line crossed. Inside, he follows a man into a private room, and it's the final line. Whatever happens next, Nathan can never know.

Pretty good, lacks depth
Reviewed: 12-10-21
This book was okay. The plot started off interesting and exciting but quickly became a repetitive cover up that never really worked and there weren't any interesting connections to deepen the story. Got pretty tedious and uninteresting at points and the characters poor decisions made it hard to care whether or not they or their relationships survived. Also, about a quarter into the book I noticed that the narrator for Oliver was using a subtle whiny, panicked tone to his voice that never seemed to change for the rest of the book and got REALLY annoying. All of that being said - I felt compelled to finish it so it was interesting enough!

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

The last 2 hours I thought "I just don't care"
Reviewed: 01-19-18
What disappointed you about Artemis?
I finished it but I was not invested at all. The characters were one dimensional and the plot, which did include a few action scenes, was filled with lunar techno jargon that wasn't tethered to an engaging story line.
Would you recommend Artemis to your friends? Why or why not?
No it didn't contain enough depth or excitement to make it worth it.
Did Rosario Dawson do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I love Rosario Dawson but this was hard to listen to. Stereotyped accents, sloppy transitions during dialogue at times, and some sexist statements and descriptions that I know she didn't write but still left me questioning her decision to perform this audio book.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Artemis could have been the setting for a really great story, but this fell short in a lot of ways.
