CLEAR MESSAGE!
Reviewed: 08-24-23
This book provides incredible details and importantly, discusses many of the different perspectives relating to the various longevity / healthspan topics. In short, whether we are predisposed to any particular disease / ailment, we can improve our chances for a long / healthy life by building strength / stability, aerobic fitness, sleeping well and eating a nutritious diet, low in sugar, high in protein, not excessive calories. All of that said, all of our situations are a bit different and we need to figure out what works, and doesn’t work, for us. Dr. Attia must be commended on putting this fantastic resource / road map together. The final section discussing the importance of emotional wellness is at least as important, and perhaps more important, than the others. Dr Attia is very candid about his own personal struggle and what he had to endure to get to a better place. This section and the whole book particularly emphasize the importance of focusing one’s energy / efforts on what they can do to get better. That’s what it’s all about!

Story
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

In addition to sharing these detailed accounts of her hospice patients, Hadley also goes into depth regarding her own story, which involved significant challenges. We are stronger for her efforts as a nurse and for sharing her personal journey. Thank you Hadley!

Story
Step by step, mile by mile, his body and mind heal. In this lyrical, vulnerable, and breathtaking memoir, J. M. Thompson, now a successful psychologist, retraces the path that led him from despair to wellness, detailing the chilling childhood trauma that caused his depression, and the unorthodox treatment that saved him. Running Is a Kind of Dreaming is a luminous literary testament to the universal human capacity to recover from our deepest wounds.

RAW. HEARTBREAKING. INSPIRING. BEAUTIFUL.
Reviewed: 08-24-23
Thompson is so eloquent in the telling of his story, capturing the details in extraordinary detail and vivid imagery. That story, while absolutely heartbreaking at times, is instructive for so many of us in coming to terms with our own challenges and helping those around us who may be struggling. I particularly appreciate how Thompson addresses the need for professionals to see their patients as human beings, treat them fairly, and appropriately sharing their own story is part of that.

... to pull all of this information together and create a greatness roadmap. I was skeptical how well this book would resonate with me given my extensive background in self-help books, psychology books, philosophy books and other resources which help an individual explore their history, their challenges and their potential for greatness. That said, I was constantly amazed how this book hit a nerve with me in terms of identifying points of weakness and challenge for me. For example, focusing on your childhood issues, how you felt during those times and how they informed who you are today and the challenges you face.

I have been running for 40 years and found this book to be extremely informative and helpful in learning more about the technical, practical social aspect of running. Martinus Evans is a great inspiration and has created a book which can be helpful to all types of runners, especially those who are just starting out or think this is something they might want to do. as Martinus says, running is for everybody. It doesn’t matter your shape, size, color, or religion or anything else, this book is all about the spirit of athletics in general, and the activity of running in particular. Thank you Martinez for sharing your experience and leading the way for all runners. I particularly appreciate the added enhancement document that came with the book, the Q&A, at the end of each chapter, and Martinus' witty demeanor, in reading his book himself.

And an interesting round the world investigation of elite runners and the world’s great distance events. This is a really great resource for those who want to learn more about how we run and how we can improve. I especially appreciate that the authors calling out the over emphasis on gear. Running (like most things) has become an arms race / fashion show which unfortunately overshadows the purity and benefits of running for running’s sake.

FINDING TRUTH AND WELLNESS
Reviewed: 05-25-23
This book is extremely well written, but could not have been easy to write. We all have our struggles whether they be physical or psychological. But to share one's struggles in such a detailed and public way takes an incredible amount of bravery and commitment. My favorite part of this book is the overarching message of persistently seeking answers and solutions to our challenges. I hope this book will inspire others to do the same.

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

Think Like a Monk, provides a great overview of the phenomena we experience and the tools we need to become whole. It will help you to become more balanced and loving. But it is up to you to embrace these teachings in the mindset of a monk. Many parts of this book will be familiar to those who are experienced with mindfulness specifically and self-help genre generally. But that said, the book can be used as a guide or resource to come back to again and to find one’s way back to the center.

Story
As much as we might try to resist, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath, the end of a day, the end of a relationship, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

EMBRACE THE INEVITABLE
Reviewed: 05-08-23
In her latest book Pema demonstrates how she’s used how she’s devoted her life to educating herself that only on Buddhism but how to be a better person how to live better how to die better and she has taken those teachings those learnings and turn them into resources for all of us which not only allows us to make our lives better but to make the world a better place and to promote peace and love and kindness to all beings. This book is a critical resource for all. Ideally these teachings would be made available to young people as well perhaps even to be taught in schools as part of the core curriculum dedicated to making individuals in our society or global village or global society whole. I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in finding out more deeply who they are at their core and those interested in living experiencing a more loving healthy existence in this world and beyond.
