Liked it until I had to listen to Perlitz mischaracterize and complain about the rest of analytic work like a spoiled teenager. Too bad. You had something nice going until that. Unfollowed

Story
Based on Cartarescu's own role as a high school teacher, Solenoid begins with the mundane details of a diarist's life and quickly spirals into a philosophical account of life, history, philosophy, and mathematics. One character asks another: when you rush into the burning building, will you save the newborn or the artwork? On a broad scale, the novel's investigations of other universes, dimensions, and timelines reconcile the realms of life and art.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Cut the music
Reviewed: 12-22-20
This was a wonderful story, read wonderfully, but seriously damaged by music tracks that were inserted seemingly at random, didn’t fit the tone of the story, and were often so loud they drowned out the reader. They were also often really annoying, as if they were intentionally trying to recreate the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard.

The new novel - a book that sold more than a million copies the first week it went on sale in Japan - from the internationally acclaimed author, his first since IQ84. Here he gives us the remarkable story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. It is a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.

It’s Murakami without the surrealism, which I don’t know if I would have chosen if I knew. But I’m so glad I read it. I’d say this is one of his most beautiful books.

I’ve heard Joe and Charlie in the past and love them. This version should not be sold. A large section from the middle is missing and several chapters repeat (I guess to make up the missing time). Don’t waste your money on this, I’ll be complaining to Audible for my money back.
