Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

I will forever narrate anything octopus related in this narrators voice. I thought having an animal perspective in a book would be weird, but it was actually the highlight. Great book, great narration!

Not my fave in this series…
Reviewed: 01-09-23
I’ve listened to the second and third in this series and then found this one. The story is good, but the raunchy sex and abuse scenes are over the top and the constant carrying on about Rachel grinds on my nerves. That being said, this isn’t the case in the rest of the series so I’m really glad I didn’t find this book first. Dan Riley is a likable character and the author does a great job with the plot lines in her books. Narrator is great.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

It was an interesting story, well told and the narrator was easy to listen to. No, he didn’t have a “scary” voice, but he had a great tone to his voice and the book wasn’t written in a scary way anyway.

Story
In July 1965, teenagers Sylvia and Jenny Likens were left in the temporary care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a middle-aged single mother, and her seven children. The Baniszewski household was overrun with children. There were few rules and ample freedom. Sadly, the environment created a dangerous hierarchy of social Darwinism where the strong preyed on the weak. What transpired in the following three months was both riveting and chilling.

While the story itself is highly disturbing and the details completely cringeworthy the author does a good job telling the story in a straightforward manner. The narrator is easy to listen to, but the female voices were a little silly.

Story
Queensland, Australia, 1936 Sister Claire McAuliffe has been called from Dungarvan, County Waterford, to do God’s work in Jumaaroo, Queensland. Along with four other sisters, she is charged with setting up a Catholic school for the education of the gold rush families. But life between the tropical Australian rainforest and the azure ocean is far from the spectacular paradise it seems. Sister Claire finds life challenging in more ways than she can count—but far more worrying is the constant presence of the much-loved mayor of Jumaaroo, Joseph McGrath.
