Story
When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of US airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.

Beautiful story

Most of us know the bones of this story, but to have it fleshed out made it very real. It recalls a time when evil struck the US hard. But then goodness rebounded and truly won the day in Gander. The tale of these good folks and their guests brought me to tears over and over again. If you’re feeling bad about human kind—I would wholeheartedly prescribe this good read.

If asked, who among us wouldn't say we were kind people? But kindness is often manifested in feelings of pity or sympathy - especially when others are watching - rather than in deeds. And when it comes down to it, what good does mere feeling do for the world?

There may be no real new information here, but hearing it laid out like this encouraged me to be much more mindful of expressing kindness in tangible ways everyday. Who doesn’t need such a reminder? Though I initially got the Audible version, I then bought the paperback so that I could go through the high points again. I also bought one for a friend, and it’s one of those books I’m sure I’ll be handing out frequently. Winner!

Heartbreaking and hilarious

If you’re comfortable with your long-held beliefs about compassion and who is or is not deserving, then by all means, do not read this book. But if you’re up for rethinking those ideas, shifting the paradigm and maybe even getting your world rocked, then this is for you. Kind of the perfect combination of Bob Goff and Brene Brown.

Story
Ten years ago, I adopted Blue after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning, I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you to never buy a dog on impulse. Going to the pound because you need something in your life that's worth holding onto is rarely, if ever, mentioned. I asked the man at the pound to show me the biggest dogs they had. He showed me some Rottweiler-German Shepherd puppies that he said would grow to be quite large.

Story was convoluted but fun. A couple of small details that just didn’t make sense (one simply having to do with a physical attribute of a specific dog breed) bothered me. And I didn’t like the fact that Joy/Sydney was not careful about who/when/how she had sex with someone. Maybe I’m a prude, but she came off as not smart about her personal life and even slightly slutty.

This is likely my favorite in the series thus far I even liked the resemblance to the movie alluded to early on in the story—although it did creep me out a bit. And I was nervous about the outcome. I think that’s all I can say. Well done.

So much wandering.
Reviewed: 07-24-18
My least favorite of the series to date. So much wandering, both physically and metaphorically, that eventually I just didn’t care anymore. But then, no one hits a home run every time at bat. (And as usual, my advice that the narrator check his pronunciations, especially regarding place names. Other than that, excellent job!)

First off, I have to admit, I love Jen Hatmaker. That being said, I think this is by far her best yet. I laughed and cried and thought deeply--in the first half hour of the book! I love that she reads it, that she gets choked up at a couple of points, and that she is every bit as sassy as my own family. Relax, sisters, you can love Jesus and still be a bit snarky. If you are a woman between the ages of 23 and dead, read/listen to this book. It's a delight, and rich in all the things that fill our hearts.

Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's 60 years old.
