Story
Rebus' retirement is disrupted once again when skeletal remains are identified as a private investigator who went missing more than a decade earlier. The remains, found in a rusted car in the East Lothian woods, not far from Edinburgh, quickly turn into a cold-case murder investigation. Rebus' old friend Siobhan Clarke is assigned to the case, but neither of them could have predicted what buried secrets the investigation will uncover.

Rebus Is Still Rebus I Guess
Reviewed: 08-02-24
This might have been a good story, but I don't really know because the narrator in his zeal to sound authentic, produced an accent I couldn't understand, I finally gave up, and I didn't finish the book. I have listened to all the Rebus novels and never encountered this issue.

Disappointing Read

I chose this book on a whim because it was in Jimmy Fallon's summer book club. I will not do that again. The author's writing is elementary and dull. I felt like I was reading a story written by an inexperienced writer. I wondered if she had an editor. The story, while it had potential, was laborious. The writing was mundane, and I wanted the author to have her characters to at least say something in an interesting way. The technique of switching characters and times was distracting. I did listen to the entire book, but it took a lot of effort.

Story
On her sixtieth birthday, a woman commits suicide. When the case lands on Detective Carl Mørck’s desk, he can’t imagine what this has to do with Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division since the cause of death seems to be clear. But his superior, Marcus Jacobsen, is convinced that this is not in fact a suicide, but a murder related to an unsolved case that has been plaguing him since 1988.

This book had so many holes it was rather silly. It almost seemed as if the book was written by another author. Very disappointing, and if the ending was supposed to make me wait anxiously for the next Department Q book, it had the opposite effect. I'm not sure I will even read it. The narrator is excellent!

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Great Premise Silly Story
Reviewed: 01-24-23
This could have been an excellent book because it sheds light on the still existing unequal rights of women; however, the descriptions are simplistic and the story itself just unbelievable and silly. I finished listening because I paid for it, but had I checked it out of the library, I would have returned it unread.

This book has implausible scenarios to carry the plot and a ridiculous premise for the plot. If it had been listed as a fantasy, it might have passed muster, but I'm not sure even that would help this story. I should have returned it, but since I kept listening thinking that surely it had to get better, I didn't return it. Don't waste a credit on this book.

Story
Decades after its original publication, James Agee’s last novel seems, more than ever, an American classic. For in his lyrical, sorrowful account of a man’s death and its impact on his family, Agee painstakingly created a small world of domestic happiness and then showed how quickly and casually it could be destroyed.

I tried to listen to the first book, THE HYPNOTIST by Lars Kepler. I skip read thinking it was bound to get better, but to no avail so finally returned it. I usually enjoy mysteries and detective stories set in the Scandinavian countries so I thought I would give the author, who is two authors using a pen name, another chance. I did skip read, but at least i got to the end of the book. These characters did not appeal to me, and the dialogue and descriptions became, for me, boring and tedious. I'm not sure any human could actually survive the violence inflicted on these characters. They are almost super human.

One of the best books I have listened to in many months. The narrator is excellent. I did find I enjoyed the book much more after I obtained a print copy and could listen along with the narrator simply because I needed to see the pronunciations of the Russian names and places. The book has many characters and an intricate plot; however, Martin Cruz Smith's beautiful writing and description use of language makes the book mesmerizing. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

What did you like best about Fever Dream? What did you like least?
It was OK for filling hours of travel time, but I would have had no trouble ending the story at any time and never bother to wonder how it ended. As a matter of fact, the book was actually better without the ending.
Has Fever Dream turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
What does William Hughes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I could travel and listen.
Did Fever Dream inspire you to do anything?
It inspired me to not chose this author again which was disappointing because I thought maybe I had discovered new characters I would enjoy getting to know over time.
