This isn’t some space marine novel. This is modern literature at its finest. Funny, reflective, deeply sad, and thrilling it’s got all the best elements of any great novel about the human condition—it’s simply set in the mind-bending world of a sci-fi soldier of fortune. I could write a hundred million words and never equal what Nick Cole has achieved with this modern masterpiece.

Soda Pop Soldier Rules!

Ready Player One? LAME! Soda Pop Soldier is where this premise succeeds big time. Video games? That's for kiddies. How about corporate wars fought by virtual super-soldiers! I am very much swayed by the down-on-his-luck hero who keeps fighting because...what other choice is there? The Cola Wars create an opportunity for this warrior by any other name, and the mix of real and virtual creates a universe where anything can happen. Great Sci-Fi military action and corporate intrigue with a redeeming ending that left me feeling satisfied, but with the suspicion that the tale isn't done yet.

Story
Sam Rockwell came home from the Second World War to work as a fledgling private investigator specializing in helping "Returns": recently deceased ghosts who've come back with unfinished business. Short on experience and long on the imitated swagger of the detectives found in his dog-eared collection of pulp fiction P.I. mysteries, the quick-witted Sam waits for his big break - and his chance to win the heart of Amelia, his Girl Friday. But when his no-nonsense father is murdered and becomes a Return himself, everything changes.

Fallible, loveable Cold War supernatural P.I.

So entertaining! Wonderfully performed! Not only a fun listen, but many existential and even relationship issues had me pondering life in general. I love the supernatural, post-war America, and noir-detective genre; this is a cool blending of both. I really look forward to seeing these characters continue to deal with "returns" and soon.
