Predictable

I couldn’t finish. Life is too short to be this bored by a book. Language choice is uninteresting. Story is uninteresting. Just not for me.

Resonated with me

I’m going through a separation, so I picked this book as a way to work through some of the issues and feelings that I’m having. It was helpful for that, but I also enjoyed it on a narrative level. I found the storytelling technique of using small, disconnected snippets of narration—like snapshots that you might go through on your phone to reminiscing about the things that have happened to you or you’ve done—to be an interesting way to describe going back through your life and remembering the moments of a multi decade relationship. I also enjoyed the matter of fact tone that the author takes as she describes deeply emotional scenes. This reminded me of “Room” where the narrative voice as told from a child’s perspective gives you space between the horrors of the subject matter and yourself as the observer/reader. Just as I found myself wondering why the main character stays with her husband, there would be a moment of levity or affection in their lives. This too I found very effective as a narrative technique, keeping me engaged as the reader and able to experience her marriage without judging her outside of it. It was exactly what I needed for my situation right now, and it would also be an interesting read for a creative writing class exploring voice, tone, and plot.

Story
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

As a TCM practitioner, this was so fun to listen to—knowing the formulas referenced and how they are used today. Excellent character development. Interesting plot. Very much enjoyed this.

Slow start, better middle, predictable ending

As the title of my review suggests, I felt that this book was a little slow in the first chapter or two. After it got going, I had a really good time listening to it. I appreciated that the graphic parts were not so graphic that I couldn’t sleep, and that, in particular, the violence against women was largely inferred rather than graphically described. There were a lot of very detailed descriptions of boats and waterways that were fun for me to listen to. It added to the depth of the character—that his enthusiasm showed through in these descriptions. I appreciated that the narrator they chose to do the reading had a slight southern accent (although I would place the reader as being from Missouri rather than Florida). I appreciated that the last 1/3 of the book is somewhat expected, but doesn’t disappoint. A few of the scenes are a bit unbelievable medicine-wise, but entertaining nevertheless. I still give it 5 stars because it was a pleasant use of my time. A heroic narrative, entertaining story arc, and predictable but pleasant characters.
