Story
North Yorkshire, England. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is reluctantly easing into life in the dales. As he gradually acclimatizes to the slower pace of the countryside while he awaits a return to the city, he’s called out to inspect a farmer’s crushed body. And despite the doctor on site declaring it a tragic mishap, the seasoned police officer rolls up his sleeves when evidence points to foul play. With a mysterious clue the only connection and the not-so-quiet village in self-imposed lockdown, the city-bred cop hunts for a link lethal enough to lead to murder.

Knew the bad guy pretty early and I wish UK writers didn't always make cops act and sound foolish. I will continue with the series.

Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

I knew the solutions early on. The main character is not appealing (I actually thought the book was written by a woman) As for the other players they were rather boring and typical. I think the author should go back to Finance. very limp biscuit.

i saw it coming from very early on. A tired story, a lazy plot. I am sick of this same narrative. Are there any UK writers that don't hate religion. A huge waste of time.

JD needs to stop with the same scenarios, it is getting boring. For all his liberal tolerance he sure seems to make it all about helpless women, which is annoying. I think he needs to stop pumping out books so quickly and give them more thought. He gas created some great characters.

I enjoyed these stories until this one. The climax was an absurdity and strained credulity. It also needed to be an hour shorter. Definitely not up to the usual standards. Maybe the author should be less prolific and more thoughtful.

Story
Chef Sigisbert "Bear" Valets has just opened his own restaurant, La Fontaine, in Aix-en-Provence. It's an immediate success - glowing reviews and a loyal clientele, including our favorite investigative duo, Verlaque and Bonnet. But when he decides to extend his restaurant's seating into a historic courtyard, some very powerful neighbors are against him. The local historical society wants the courtyard, which witnessed a 17th-century hanging and two World War II-era murders, to remain untouched.
