an emotional story
Reviewed: 01-04-24
÷This story captures the trauma that can occur in the system. There are good homes but there are also very bad ones. Trauma needs to be worked through and no one has to stay a victim, especially if they have been victimized but overcoming requires love and commitment.

Young Abigail suffers greatly from the way she is being raised by her mother, for whom a woman's only place is in the kitchen. At the same time, her father's dedicated fight for freedom also ignites in her a passion for the American Revolution. When news of her father's death reaches her, she has a falling out with her mother. Soon after, Abigail goes on her way to fight for freedom and independence, like her father had done. On the way, she encounters the young English deserter Edward, who has come to the realization that he went to war for the wrong ideals.

Easy listening, enjoyable though sometimes predictable historical fiction / romance. Historical inaccuracies are explained at the end.

Story
The American Revolution was a home-front war that brought scarcity, bloodshed, and danger into the life of every American, and Carol Berkin shows us that women played a vital role throughout the struggle. Berkin takes us into the ordinary moments of extraordinary lives. We see women boycotting British goods in the years before independence, writing propaganda that radicalized their neighbors, raising funds for the army, and helping finance the fledgling government. We see how they managed farms, plantations, and businesses while their men went into battle.

loved the diversity of women covered

loved the fact that this book covered Patriots and Torres. It covered the native women's views and lives. Also the perspective black individuals, of both free and slave standpoints were included. I found this to be an interesting book and easy to stick with.

From one of our most acclaimed and original colonial historians, a groundbreaking book - the first to look at the critical "long year" of 1774 and the revolutionary change that took place from December 1773 to mid-April 1775, from the Boston Tea Party and the First Continental Congress to the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

There was good information and it depicted the views well. For me, this was an on purpose read - not a page turner that you can't put down.
