I really liked this book. The twist was unexpected and yet fit. I don't always love books about younger characters but this was interesting and complex and the characters were fully developed and multi dimensional. Great story & performance.

Story
Simone used to be the woman that other women would use if they suspected that their partner was cheating. She would investigate, find out the truth, and if the men were guilty, exact revenge. But after things went wrong with one couple, Simone was forced to go into hiding. Simone is now Mary, a mild-mannered woman who doesn't raise her voice or get angry, meaning nobody would suspect her of being capable of the things she used to do for a living. But when she finds out that her new boyfriend is having an affair, it awakens in her the person she used to be.

Disappointing

I was initially annoyed by the premise of the main characters job and then her response to relationship problems but kept listening because I figured there had to be a good twist. The twist was unexpected but also unbelievable and rediculous. I couldn't even finish the final 17 minutes.

It didn't completely ruin the story for me because the narration was great but it held very few surprises. works for me when I'm busy with other stuff and am a bit distracted... missing things isn't really an issue.

Story
On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

This is a great story. It started out a bit slow but before I realized it I was sucked in by the story & performance. this is so much more than a mystery. The characters do well developed and the smooth transitions between the present, past and the journal enhanced the story. All around wonderful.

There is so much to appreciate about this book. The story, the writing and the amazing performance. I listened on a whim and am so happy I did. I never thought I'd emi historical fiction but I was wrong. The characters are so well developed, complete people with flaws and very human. They're isn't conflict just got the sake of conflict or unnecessary angst.
I can't say enough about the performance. it is done so well that it was easy to get lost in the characters. flawless.

It's rare that I listen to a book and truly get lost in it. This book has it all. Young love, youth ambition, growth, challenges and an excellent narration. I love books that are realistic and feel "normal" without forcing angst. I don't often listen to books more than once but this one I'll go back to. Just wonderful.

Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface.

It was on the verge of great but never pulled it together. I'm not sure exactly what the point of this book was. It was frustrating to follow along in this child's head a she tried to solve mysteries all over the place. in the end I couldn't tell what was her childhood dramatization of a situation and what was actual fact. Her dad was clearly troubled but was he what she thought he was? I kept listening hoping it would flush itself out but it never did. This book landed you as confused as ever in the end.
