I recommend The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro for anyone who loves fragrances.

“Perfume should tell a story of who you are, who you might be, perhaps even of who you fear becoming…”

This book gives me The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo vibes. I am only about half way through, and every page is a pleasure.

It is about Grace Monroe, a wife, who feels she is an “odd duck” in London high society. She becomes the sole heir to Eva d’Orsey’s fortune. But wait? Grace has no clue who this woman is; then, travels to Paris, France to find what links her to Eva. The setting flips between London, Paris, and New York, winding through the 1920s and 1955.

This was a book club read and my motivation for finishing. I normally give books a few chapters for the story to really hook me, but it took until chapters 15-21 to really pull me in.

I have not read the author’s previous books, and it is my understanding that this is Black’s first adult fiction book. The first chapters definitely shows. However, in the end, the stories pieces together and left me thinking, “would I read a sequel to Book of Night?”

“The Universe belongs to the curious.” Chapter 22.

Beautifully curated, thoughtful moving story. I enjoyed how Common laced his memory of his father into the flow of the performance. Emotional rollercoaster from a son’s eyes and heart. Thank you for this piece.

I could not decide whether to buy this book in paper form or through Audibles. I like to annotate books, which is why I buy books I plan to add to my library. I figured I will do the Audible clip notes simply because I did not want to fall into another trap of buying a book and not having the “time” to read it. The audible could play in the car during my commute.

Jeff Bottoms is the perfect reader. The listen was pace is perfect. Cal Newport wrote clearly, concisely, and in a form complex yet under stable and digestible. His explanation of Deep Work and practical tips to how to incorporate it into life (no matter how staccato it is) are insightful. I am the one who has an active life as a single parent, full time career with demanding loads and email inboxes, as well as the grad student and volunteer worker. I needed Cal Newport’s book to help me focus and stay productive. Meaningful productivity.
