Chief Inspector Macdonald has been invited to a treasure hunt party at the house of the Graham Coombe, the celebrated publisher of Murder by Mesmerism. The clues of the hunt have been devised by Coombe's thriller-writer friends, disguised on the night under literary pseudonyms. Classic Golden Age mystery

I've really enjoyed Lorac's books. This is a well-plotted book with the complexities of a great mystery. I'm a huge fan of David Thorpe as narrator, but his narration doesn't detract from the story.

Fun, flawed frivolity

I enjoy these stories. They do require a HUGE suspension of reality. This mystery is implausible from the beginning and the identity of the victim could have been solved easily, but then we wouldn't be able to enjoy the kooky story and characters. The narrator is great!

Fun for adults, too!

I didn't realize that this was a YA book until I started listening. Still, it's actually more fun than some cosy series for adults, such as the awful HRS series. This is a fun distraction, simple and straightforward writing.

Not my favorite installment of the series

I still found the book diverting. However, there was very little substance. A lot of dialogue, a lot of running around, but a thin plot and not much witty banter. There was just something missing. Most of the character development has stagnated. In fact, Sunderland and the other characters seem almost superfluous. There's none of the spirit that they displayed in earlier stories. This series is well written and outstandingly narrated, so I'll probably stick with it if there's another book after this. But I won't be disappointed if this is the last in the series. I think it has run its course.

Good dramatizations, uneven accents
Reviewed: 04-03-22
As with the other dramatizations in this series, most of the actors are American. The actors, with the exception of the actor who voices Holmes, are inept at maintaining a British or any other accent. However, the dramatizations themselves are good, and the production is better than many of the BBC audio performances.

Distracting accents but good dramatizations

Most of the actors are American, with varying degrees of success in reproducing British accents. I found the American accents distracting. The actual dramatizations of the Sherlock Holmes stories are very good.

The year 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Not the best Beryl and Edwina adventure

The story gets a bit muddled and repetitive. There were a couple times when the dialogue in one part of the book was very similar to another part. A couple of times I actually thought I was listening to the same chapter because of the repetitive conversations. The story had a lot of extraneous narrative due to lazy writing and bad editing. This book wasn't as fun or interesting as previous installments. But it was still a worthwhile escape. Barbara Rosenblatt is a great narrator.

I keep enjoying these books. They aren't as formulaic as most cosy mysteries and some of the characters actually evolve. Flo is back on track as a great character. Lady Hardcastle is less irritating than in books 3-5. I like that this book was able to balance Village life with the spy theme. I hope this isn't the end of the series, but it seems the author is focusing on a spin-off series. My one complaint is that Lady Hardcastle's narration is inconsistent and occasionally very strident.
