Story
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was a world away from John Luckadoo’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. But when the Japanese attacked the American naval base on December 7, 1941, he didn’t hesitate to join the military. Trained as a pilot with the United States Air Force, Second Lieutenant Luckadoo was assigned to the 100th Bomb Group stationed in Thorpe Abbotts, England. Between June and October 1943, he flew B-17 Flying Fortresses over France and Germany on bombing runs devised to destroy the Nazi war machine.

Excellent Account of the Bloody 100th

This was a solid account of the lift of a bomber pilot over Europe in WW2. I’ve read a few air war accounts, I place this one at the top.

Story
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

This was an excellent way to lay out both the processes as well as the risks of conducting nuclear war. I suspect most of our population is unaware of how close we are to the very real possibility of nuclear war and its consequences.

Story
In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,000-foot peak of a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness, alone with the enemy closing in on three sides, beginning the most difficult and exceptional fight of his life.

Bravery and Military Disfunction
Reviewed: 06-07-24
This is an excellent examination of a Combat Air Controller’s life and heroic death. One of our best. With that said, the book also sheds light on the military’s sins of bone headed command and control decisions and hubris. As usual, no one is punished for these transgressions that cost the lives of so many servicemen.

Story
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

A Great Story on the Opening of the American Frontier
Reviewed: 03-09-24
I consider myself reasonably well read on our nation’s history, but this book really filled in parts of my glossed over understanding of the expansion of America. This was a well told story from both the American and Native American perspectives. This would be a great miniseries! The narrator was excellent as well.

Story
In 1842, following the doctor's orders for a change of climate, William Thomas Hamilton found himself accompanying a party of trappers on a yearlong expedition. Heading into the wild, Hamilton would prove himself to be a fast learner, as adept with a firearm as with sign language: this early experience would be the making of him. As the 19th century progressed, along with many other trappers, Hamilton found himself drawn into the Indian Wars brought about by territorial expansion.

Willi Langbein was just thirteen when the Nazis took him away from his parents under the pretense of protecting him. Their real reason was to turn him into cannon-fodder for use against Hitler’s enemies. Deployed to the collapsing Eastern Front in the last days of the war, Willi, now aged fourteen, and his schoolmates were ordered to stave off the relentless Russian advance. None were expected to return alive from the final battles of the Third Reich.

Very little on actual combat
Reviewed: 12-29-23
The first half of the book is about the young man’s childhood. There is only a short period of him actually in combat ( this part was good). The remainder of the book was the postwar experiences—parts were interesting. I was not impressed with the narrator— his script induced laughter was quite annoying. Bottom line, if you are looking for a story that examines a youth’s experience in combat, this is not the book for you.

If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.
